The Name of the Mighty Pass—A Stage for Peril and Conquest
The name"Juyong"can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty.Legend has it that during the construction of the Great Wall,Qin Shi Huang(the First Emperor)relocated prisoners, soldiers, and conscripted laborers—known as yongtu—to settle in this area;thus, the site acquired the name"Juyong."As early as the Warring States Period, ancient texts such as Lüshi Chunqiu(The Annals of LüBuwei)listed Juyong Pass as one of the"Nine Great Strategic Passes Under Heaven."Historically referred to as"Juyong Sai"(Juyong Fortress),the site strategically commands the Jundu Xing—one of the"Eight Passes of the Taihang Mountains"—serving as the vital throat-like corridor connecting the North China Plain to the vast Mongolian Plateau.Historically, this site served successively as a fortified pass during the Han Dynasty, the Jundu Pass during the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the Jimen Pass during the Tang Dynasty. It was not until the Ming Dynasty that General Xu Da planned and constructed the formidable fortress that stands here today—a structure that has commanded the landscape with enduring majesty for centuries.Renowned for its perilous terrain—characterized by"two mountains standing guard on either side, with a stream flowing alongside"—it has long been hailed as the"Foremost Pass Under Heaven"and has historically been a strategic stronghold fiercely contested by military strategists throughout the ages.

Traces of Civilization:Multi-Ethnic Integration Beneath the Cloud Platform
The modern narrative of Juyong Pass is,above all,an epic saga of the intermingling of multi-ethnic civilizations.During the Yuan Dynasty,Juyong Pass served as a royal stopping-place for the emperors traveling between the Yuan capital,Dadu(present-day Beijing),and the summer capital,Shangdu;consequently, its architectural development experienced a monumental leap forward. At the heart of the fortress stands the"Cloud Platform"(Yuntai)—a magnificent structure constructed from white marble. This platform originally served as the massive base for a"street-spanning pagoda"typical of the Yuan era, atop which once stood three Tibetan-style stupas. The arched passageway beneath the Cloud Platform features exquisitely intricate bas-reliefs depicting figures such as the Four Heavenly Kings and the mythical Golden-Winged Bird(Garuda).Furthermore, the interior walls are inscribed with Buddhist sutras and mantras in six distinct scripts—Sanskrit,Tibetan,Mongolian,Uyghur,Tangut(Xixia),and Chinese—serving as invaluable tangible evidence of both ethnic integration and religious artistry. In 1961,the Cloud Platform at Juyong Pass was designated as one of the first batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.Today, the restored Juyong Pass has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, standing as one of the most brilliant gems within the cultural belt of the Great Wall.

Must-See Wonders:A Symphony of Rugged Peaks and Immortal Stone Carvings

Nature's Masterpiece:The Verdant Beauty and Perilous Peaks of Guangou Valley
The Guangou Valley, home to Juyong Pass, stretches nearly 20 kilometers in length.Flanked by steep, towering mountains and cascading ridges, and traversed by a gently murmuring stream,it presents a magnificent tableau painted by the hand of nature itself—using mountains, water, and forests as its brush and ink.

The"Seventy-Two Scenic Spots of Guangou"and the"Layered Verdure of Juyong"
This is a 15-kilometer-long natural art gallery that seamlessly weaves together the threads of history and scenic beauty.Scattered throughout this ancient Jundu Pass route lie the"Seventy-Two Scenic Spots of Guangou."These include not only bizarrely shaped peaks and crystal-clear springs but also deep cliffside grottoes and the ruins of ancient postal stations. The most classic natural wonder is undoubtedly"Tanqin Gorge"(The Gorge of the Playing Zither):here,a stream winds its way along the granite valley floor, weaving through a jumble of rocks. Thanks to the resonant acoustics of the gorge, the murmuring water sounds just like the strumming of an ancient zither—a serene melody that never ceases.Furthermore, the"Juyong Diecui"(Layered Emeralds of Juyong)—renowned throughout the land since the Jin Dynasty—represents the pinnacle of the scenery across all four seasons. In late spring and early summer, the mountains on either side rise majestically like emerald screens;the forests are lush and dense, offering a feast of vibrant greenery for the eyes.In deep autumn, the hillsides ablaze with red foliage contrast beautifully with the somber gray of the ancient city walls—a spectacle affectionately dubbed"Juyong Diejin"(Layered Gold of Juyong).

The"Sea ofFlowers"Train and the Dual Grandeur of the Pass
Juyong Pass boasts a unique topography characterized by"two mountains flanking a single waterway."As spring warms the land and the flowers bloom, the S2 line train of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway slowly winds its way beneath Juyong Pass, passing through a veritable sea ofapricot and wild peach blossoms.Affectionately dubbed the"Train to Spring"by visitors,it creates a striking visual contrast between the rugged fortitude of the Great Wall and the delicate beauty of the floral landscape.Ascending one of the watchtowers to gaze into the distance, one sees the ancient brick-and-stone walls snaking and undulating along the mountain ridges.Flanked by Cuiqingshan(Emerald Screen Mountain)on one side and Jinquishan(Golden Cabinet Mountain)on the other, the eastern and western sections of the Great Wall spread out like the wings of a soaring roc—a truly magnificent sight.

Photography Tip:From the vicinity of Watchtowers No.4 or No.5,use a wide-angle lens to capture the Great Wall's sinuous curves, the sea offlowers, the passing train, and the distant mountains—all framed within a single shot.

Human Ingenuity:Faith Carved in Stone
The architecture found here is not merely a masterpiece of military defense;it is also a treasure trove of sculptural art and spiritual devotion.

The Juyong Pass Cloud Platform(The Base of the Yuan Dynasty"Street-Crossing Pagoda")
This is the spiritual landmark and very soul of Juyong Pass.A massive work of stone sculpture crafted entirely from pure white marble, the structure features a rectangular profile that tapers from a broad base to a narrower top.The platform's upper perimeter is adorned with intricately carved stone railings and decorative drainage spouts—a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. This pagoda was commissioned by Emperor Shun, the last emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, who prayed that"travelers passing below might take refuge in the Buddha's Way and universally receive the Dharma."The bas-reliefs adorning the interior of the Cloud Platform's arched gateway are rendered with vigorous energy and vivid realism;the Four Heavenly Kings glare with wide, furious eyes while demons writhe beneath their feet, projecting an aura of formidable deterrence.Legend has it that when Emperor Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty ventured out of Juyong Pass in disguise one night, his steed was so terrified by the sight of the Heavenly Kings'statues that it refused to advance;the Emperor was forced to order his attendants to use smoke and fire to blacken the statues before they could proceed. Most precious of all are the scriptures and mantras inscribed in six ancient scripts upon the inner walls of the arched tunnel;to this day, they remain an irreplaceable primary source for the study of ancient languagesand the history of Buddhism's dissemination.

The Fortress Defense System
The fortress complex at Juyong Pass features two main gates—one to the north and one to the south—each fortified by an outer barbican:a horseshoe-shaped one to the south and a rectangular one to the north.Mounted atop the ramparts are antique cannons cast during the Ming Dynasty, known as the"Divine Might Great Generals,"whose cold, steely glint still lingers today. The unique"herringbone-shaped"city walls were constructed to follow the natural contours of the terrain, incorporating 28 distinct military structures—including watchtowers, signal beacons, water gates, and guardhouses—to form a multi-layered,three-dimensional defensive network. It stands as a textbook-perfect exemplar of Ming Dynasty Great Wall architecture. As you stroll along the circular trail winding between the Eastern and Western Mountain sections of the Great Wall, you can clearly look down upon the fortress complex, observing its fully enclosed perimeter and imposing grandeur. Here, you can truly experience the ancient military wisdom encapsulated in the adage:"With one man guarding the pass, ten thousand cannot force their way through."

Photography Tips:
The best vantage point for a panoramic shot is located between Watchtowers No.5 and No.6 on the Western Mountain section of the Great Wall;from here, you can capture the full scope of the fortress, the Cloud Platform, and the layers of surrounding mountains all in a single frame.

The interior of the Northern Barbican offers the ideal location for photographing the intricate details of the Cloud Platform's stone carvings,as well as capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the plaque bearing the inscription"The Foremost Strategic Pass Under Heaven."
Early morning—or the moments just after the rain has cleared—presents the best opportunity to ascend the high ground on the Eastern Mountain to capture the ethereal mists and clouds that give rise to the scenic view known as"Juyong's Verdant Layers."

Drone flight is permitted within the scenic area(provided you avoid densely populated tourist zones);aerial photography allows you to capture epic shots of the Great Wall as it spans the Beijing-Tibet Expressway and weaves seamlessly alongside the Water Gate river channel.

How to Get There:A Seamless Connection Guide
The Juyongguan section of the Great Wall is situated along the Beijing-Tibet Expressway(G6),approximately 60 kilometers from Beijing's city center. It is easily accessible via both public transportation and private vehicle.

If traveling from downtown Beijing, taking the bus is recommended. From Deshengmen, you can take the Route 919"Slow Bus"(departures available after 7:30 AM)directly to the"Scenic Area Parking Lot 1"stop.Alternatively,take Route 883 from Deshengmen to the Nankou Dongjie stop, then transfer to Route Chang-68 for a direct ride to the scenic area.

Visitors opting for the subway can take the Changping Line to Changping Dongguan Station.Upon exiting the station, transfer to Route 376 or Chang-11 to reach Nankou Dabao, then transfer to Route Chang-20 for a direct connection to the scenic area.

For those driving,we recommend navigating to"Juyongguan Great Wall Parking Lot 1"or"Parking Lot 3(Yuntai)."Simply take the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway and exit at Juyongguan(Exit 46)to arrive directly at the site;the expressway toll is approximately 21 RMB.The scenic area features a total of five parking lots.

Important Return Trip Reminder:The last departures for the Route 919"Slow Bus"and Route Chang-20 typically occur quite early in the evening(usually between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM).If you plan to stay to watch the sunset, please be sure to allow ample time for your return journey.Should you miss the last public bus,you can opt to book a ride-hailing service back to the city;we can also assist you in arranging a private chartered transfer service.

Best Time to Visit
Juyongguan experiences four distinct seasons, each offering its own unique charm;however, autumn is considered the absolute best time to visit.

The Golden Season of Autumn(Late September to Early November):With crisp, refreshing breezes and pleasant temperatures, this is an ideal time for viewing the vibrant red foliage. The leaves at Juyongguan turn red approximately two weeks earlier than those at the famous Fragrant Hills(Xiangshan). As the forests are painted in brilliant hues, casting a radiant glow upon the majestic pass, this spectacular scene is affectionately known as"Juyong Diejin"(The Layered Gold of Juyong).Spring&Summer Flower Season(April–August):In early April, the mountainsides are awash with wild peach and apricot blossoms, and the"Flower Sea Train"runs right on schedule.Summer temperatures here average about 5°C lower than in the city center, making it an ideal time for hiking and escaping the heat;however,be prepared for significant day-night temperature fluctuations and frequent rain by carrying rain gear with you.

Winter Snow Season(December–February):With fewer visitors, the Juyong Pass takes on an even more vast and solemn air after a snowfall. The Great Wall, clad in a silvery mantle of snow, and the leafless Ganggou Valley together evoke the aesthetic of a traditional black-and-white Chinese ink painting—offering a truly unique and captivating charm.
