Nature's Handiwork: Two Shores, Two Worlds Apart
The natural scenery of the Five-Colored Beach represents an eternal dialogue between color, light and shadow, and the very fabric of space and time.
Two Shores, Two Worlds: A Rare Spectacle of "Ice and Fire" in a Single Frame
The Irtysh River—the only river in my country that flows northward to empty into the Arctic Ocean—serves as the very lifeblood of the Five-Colored Beach. Neither too wide nor too narrow, it precisely cleaves the land into two starkly distinct worlds:
- The North Shore (The Yardang Realm): Characterized by dramatic, cliff-like Yardang formations that rise and fall in undulating waves, their rocky surfaces ablaze with a kaleidoscope of colors. Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, hues of ochre, earthy red, pale yellow, soft green, violet, white, and black interweave and flow together, resembling a richly textured oil painting. The stone peaks, walls, and pillars—sculpted by wind erosion—stand in varying densities; some resemble mysterious ancient castles, others look like frozen waterfalls, and still others appear as colossal beasts crouching low, sparking the imagination and evoking a myriad of images.
- The South Bank (Oasis Pastoral): In stark contrast to the desolate grandeur of the North Bank, the South Bank presents a river valley landscape lush with verdant trees that stretch into continuous forests. In the distance, undulating mountain ranges and the Gobi Desert loom; closer at hand, herds of cattle, sheep, and camels graze peacefully. The turbines of a large wind farm turn leisurely in the breeze, infusing this vast panorama with a dynamic melody of life.
Yardang Landforms: A Natural Gallery of Wind- and Water-Sculpted Earth
The Yardang landforms at Wucaitan (Five-Color Beach) serve as a living textbook of geology. The strata here are not composed of solid bedrock, but rather of sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate, featuring a relatively soft surface soil. It is precisely this "softness" that allows the sculpting work of wind and water to appear so exquisitely intricate:
- Spectacular Rock Formations: As you stroll along the wooden boardwalk, stone peaks of every conceivable shape rise up to greet you. Some resemble massive ships setting sail and cutting through the waves; others look like the ruins of ancient castles standing in silent vigil; and some appear as endearing, giant tortoises peering out toward the sea. Each rock formation holds its own unique story, waiting for you to discover it.
- The Mystery of the Wind's Song: Whenever strong winds sweep through the area, the ravines and the spaces beneath the rocks emit a chorus of strange, eerie sounds—varying in pitch and duration—adding an air of profound mystery to this otherwise silent land.
> Photography Tips: The hour leading up to sunset is the "golden hour" for photography; at this time, the angle of the light is at its lowest, and the colors are at their most saturated. It is recommended to bring a telephoto lens to capture the intricate details of the Yardang formations, while a wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing panoramic shots that highlight the dramatic contrast between the two banks of the river. The Irtysh River: A Blue Ribbon Flowing Toward the Arctic Ocean
Originating in the Altai Mountains, this river serves not only as the natural boundary for the Colorful Beach (Wucaïtan) but also as a sanctuary for cold-water fish. Rare species such as the Taimen and Siberian Sturgeon thrive and reproduce in these waters. Standing on the Aktubek Suspension Bridge—a vital thoroughfare for the seasonal migration of herdsmen—one can gaze upon the azure waters flowing serenely while taking in the panoramic scenery of both banks. Below lies the river rushing northward; within one's heart, a sense of boundless, far-reaching vastness takes hold.

Silk Road Legacies: Beacon Towers and Ancient City Walls
Scattered throughout the vicinity of the Colorful Beach are numerous ancient cultural sites. Relics such as beacon towers and ancient city walls stand as silent witnesses to the region's past prosperity and the dramatic events that unfolded along this frontier. These sites are gifts bequeathed to the present day by the Silk Road, allowing every visitor to feel the profound weight of history.
Local Folklore: A Living Portrait of Kazakh Pastoral Life
Within the oasis situated on the southern bank of the Colorful Beach, Kazakh herdsmen continue to uphold their traditional nomadic way of life. Herds of cattle and sheep, galloping horses, and leisurely camels come together to form a vivid pastoral tableau of the grasslands. If luck is on your side, you may even witness the spectacular sight of the herdsmen's seasonal migration—thousands upon thousands of livestock passing right before your eyes, kicking up clouds of dust in a truly magnificent spectacle.
> Photography Tips:
> The best vantage point for panoramic shots is the elevated observation deck located on the western side of the scenic area; from here, you can capture the Yardang landforms, the Irtysh River, and the southern oasis all in a single frame.
> The Aktubek Suspension Bridge is an ideal spot for capturing silhouette portraits and emphasizing the sense of the river stretching into the distance.
> At sunset, walk approximately 200 meters to the west for a more expansive view and fewer crowds.
> Drone flight is permitted, allowing you to capture epic, "God's-eye-view" shots that perfectly showcase the striking contrast between the river and its two distinct banks.
