The Name of the Phoenix—The Birth of an Island

The name "Phoenix Island" shares a deep lineage with Sanya itself—known as the "City of the Phoenix." Sanya is home to Phoenix Ridge, Phoenix Town, Phoenix Airport, and Phoenix Road; among these, Phoenix Island has emerged as the most dazzling jewel in the crown. The story of this artificial island began in the late 1990s, when the Sanya Port Authority proposed constructing an international passenger terminal at this very site. Between 1996 and 1998, the project underwent rigorous hydrological, meteorological, and environmental impact assessments, ultimately receiving approval from regulatory authorities at all levels.

The Path to Rebirth—From Dream to Reality

The development journey of Phoenix Island is a saga of dreams and perseverance:

The Dream Takes Root (1999): The Sanya Port Authority formed a joint venture with the Zhongcheng Group to establish Sanya Zhongcheng International Passenger Transport & Tourism Co., Ltd., marking the beginning of a gradual influx of private capital into the project.

Reclaiming the Sea to Build the Island (2002–2004): Through extensive dredging and land reclamation atop the natural coral reef, an artificial island comprising 547.5 *mu* (approximately 36.5 hectares) of land rose majestically from the ocean's surface. Bridging the Gap (2005–2006): A 394-meter-long cross-sea sightseeing bridge was completed, firmly linking the formerly isolated island to the urban center of Sanya.

Design Masterstroke (2006): Renowned young Chinese architect Ma Yansong won the bid for the core design scheme of Phoenix Island. Through a design characterized by fluid, streamlined curves, he endowed the five buildings with a unique sense of modern aesthetic beauty.

A Stunning Debut (2006–Present): The International Cruise Port opened for operations on November 9, 2006; the Wellness and Resort Center was delivered for use in 2012; and the hotels opened their doors in succession starting in 2015. In 2024, the first phase of Phoenix Island’s architectural lighting project was completed; every evening, the five buildings light up with a dazzling display of "rainbow colors," becoming the most eye-catching spectacle in the night sky over Sanya Bay.

Nature's Masterpiece—A Visual Feast Between Sea and Sky

The natural landscape of Phoenix Island represents an eternal dialogue between the sea, the sky, and the interplay of light and shadow.

360° Panoramic Seascape: An Island Embraced by the Ocean

Surrounded by the sea on all sides, Phoenix Island boasts a uniquely privileged landscape featuring a harmonious blend of mountains, ocean, and sky. From any vantage point on the island, one can experience the breathtaking sensation of being completely embraced by the vast ocean. In the early morning, as the sun rises in the east, golden sunlight floods the sea surface; in the evening, as the sun sets over Sanya Bay, the entire sky glows with radiant hues, reflecting off the shimmering waves below. The island's five buildings soar to a height of 99.8 meters; from the upper-floor rooms, simply by opening the window, guests can overlook the entirety of Sanya Bay, Luhuitou Park, and the East and West Daimao Islands. This is not only an exceptional location for admiring ocean views but also one of the premier spots for capturing photographs of the sunset over Sanya Bay.

An Extension of Sanya Bay: 22 Kilometers of Golden Sand

To its north, Phoenix Island borders the beautiful beaches of Sanya Bay—a 22-kilometer stretch known as the "Coconut Dream Corridor," which stands as one of Sanya's most captivating scenic routes. From a vantage point on the island, the sandy beaches stretch out like golden ribbons, flanked by a lush green belt of trees along the shore—together forming a perfect tableau of a tropical seaside paradise. As dusk falls, a stroll along the shores of Sanya Bay reveals a breathtaking spectacle: the light show emanating from Phoenix Island’s five iconic buildings harmonizes exquisitely with the glow of the setting sun.

Crystal-Clear Waters: Dancing with Marine Life

Situated in waters with a depth of 12 meters, Phoenix Island boasts a marine environment that is far bluer, clearer, and more pristine than that found closer to the mainland shore. The water quality in the near-shore areas is so exceptional that schools of tropical fish can be seen darting through the depths, making it an ideal destination for both scuba diving and snorkeling. Plans are currently underway to introduce a world-renowned aquarium to the island and to restore the vibrant, dazzling beauty of the local coral reef ecosystems, thereby offering visitors even more opportunities to explore the wonders of the underwater world.

Human Ingenuity—Architectural Art Floating on the Sea

Here, the buildings serve as more than mere dwellings; they are works of art designed to coexist in perfect harmony with the ocean.

The Five Streamlined Towers (International Wellness & Resort Center): The Soul of Phoenix Island

Rising to a height of 99.8 meters, these five streamlined towers stand as the most striking landmarks of Phoenix Island. Designed by the acclaimed young architect Ma Yansong, their exteriors ripple like ocean waves—characterized by elegant curves and a distinctly futuristic aesthetic. Numbered sequentially from Tower 1 to Tower 5, the complex houses an International Wellness & Resort Center (comprising fractional-ownership hotel units) alongside high-end vacation apartments. At night, the towers come alive with a dazzling display of "seven-colored lights." Featuring themes such as "The Dragon Soars over Sanya" and "A Warm Chinese New Year," this spectacular light show has become the most brilliant highlight of the Sanya Bay nightscape.

The Cross-Sea Sightseeing Bridge: A Rainbow Leading to the Heart of the Ocean

Spanning 394 meters in length and 17 meters in width, this cross-sea bridge serves as the sole land-based gateway connecting Phoenix Island to the urban center of Sanya. Boasting a modern and grand design, the bridge offers a truly immersive experience: whether driving across or riding in an electric shuttle cart, visitors are greeted by the gentle caress of the sea breeze while enjoying panoramic ocean views on both sides. The bridge's entrance is situated at the intersection of Sanya Bay Road and Guangming Road; a security checkpoint located at the bridgehead grants access exclusively to those presenting valid proof of accommodation or on-island consumption. At night, the lights on the bridge illuminate the darkness, resembling a rainbow arching across the sea.

International Cruise Port: A Floating City

The Phoenix Island International Cruise Port commenced operations on November 9, 2006. To date, it has hosted numerous international luxury liners—such as the *Costa Classica*—and once ranked first in mainland China for its volume of cruise ship arrivals. More than just a port of call for international cruises, the facility is being developed into a world-class international cruise homeport. In the future, it will be capable of accommodating 6 to 8 cruise ships simultaneously, boasting an annual passenger handling capacity of two million. Standing on the port's pier, visitors can admire the majestic silhouettes of these colossal vessels up close and experience the awe-inspiring grandeur of these "floating cities."

Seaside Commercial District & Mediterranean-Style Street: Exotic Photo Spots

The island's commercial district features a striking architectural ensemble of blue and white buildings set amidst groves of swaying coconut palms, exuding a distinct Mediterranean charm. Scenic highlights—including a sculpture plaza, terraced grass seating, and a seaside promenade—are open to visitors free of charge, offering picture-perfect backdrops where every snapshot looks like a professional masterpiece. In the future, this destination will also bring together world-renowned luxury entertainment brands and introduce exclusive private beach clubs, creating a comprehensive, all-encompassing seaside entertainment experience.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation, and Seasons

How to Get There: A Guide to Seamless Connections

Phoenix Island does not have its own airport or high-speed train station; Sanya City serves as the sole transit hub for reaching the island. Traveling from Across the Country: We recommend flying to Sanya Phoenix International Airport. *Travel Tip:* The airport is approximately 15.9 km from Phoenix Island; a taxi ride takes about 30 minutes.

From Sanya Phoenix Airport: We recommend taking a taxi or a ride-hailing service; the journey takes about 30 minutes. *Travel Tip:* Alternatively, you can take Bus Route 8 directly to the Phoenix Island intersection (fare: 5 RMB).

From Sanya City Center: We recommend taking a taxi or driving yourself; the journey takes about 10 minutes. *Travel Tip:* Use your GPS to navigate to "Sanya Phoenix Island." Security personnel at the bridge entrance will verify your accommodation credentials before granting entry.

From Nearby Attractions: We recommend chartering a vehicle or driving yourself. *Travel Times:* Wuzhizhou Island (30 minutes) / Yalong Bay (30 minutes). *Travel Tip:* This makes it ideal for combining multiple attractions into a single itinerary.

Important Island Access Notice: Phoenix Island is not a publicly accessible tourist island; entry is restricted to guests staying on the island or visitors who have made purchases/consumed services there. Upon arrival, you must present your room key card, accommodation booking confirmation, or proof of purchase/consumption. After undergoing a security check at the bridge entrance, you may board a complimentary electric shuttle vehicle to enter the island. Guests driving their own vehicles may enter the island by presenting their room key card; parking fees are capped at 30 RMB per day.

Best Time to Visit

Sanya Phoenix Island is a year-round destination, though the best times to visit are March through May and October through November.

Peak Seasons (March–May; October–November): The climate is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. This period allows you to avoid the crowds associated with the Lunar New Year holiday. The water is crystal clear, making it particularly ideal for water-based activities such as diving and paragliding. Specifically, visiting during the shoulder season (March–April) offers the advantage of fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and more affordable rates.

Summer (June–August): Temperatures are higher (25°C–32°C), making it a great time to enjoy water activities and escape the heat. However, rainfall is more frequent, and occasional typhoons may occur. August typically sees the highest rainfall levels, so visitors should pay close attention to weather forecasts and conditions.

Winter (December–February): Temperatures are mild (18°C–28°C), making it the top choice for visitors from northern regions looking to escape the cold. However, during the Lunar New Year holiday period, the island experiences heavy crowds, and accommodation rates tend to be higher. December, in particular, sees minimal rainfall and consistently sunny weather, making it an excellent time for sightseeing. 4.3 Accommodation Options

On-Island Accommodation (Our Top Recommendation):

1. Phoenix Island Sea-View Apartments/Hotels (Buildings C, D, & E):

Experience: Located in Buildings 3, 4, and 5, these units feature spacious rooms with unrivaled sea views; the private balcony bathtub is their signature highlight.

Price: Starts at 500 RMB per night during the low season; prices double during the peak season.

Ideal for: Travelers seeking stunning sea views, a romantic getaway, couples, and those with a moderate budget.

2. High-End Hotels (Building 1 / "Super-Star" Luxury Hotel):

Experience: The pinnacle of accommodation on Phoenix Island, featuring luxurious amenities such as German Hansgrohe bathroom fixtures and waterfall showers.

Ideal for: Travelers seeking the ultimate luxury experience, anniversary trips, and those with a generous budget.

Off-Island Accommodation (Flexible & Budget-Friendly Options):

1. Hotels Along Sanya Bay: A wide variety of choices ranging from budget-friendly inns to five-star hotels. You can walk to the seaside to admire the night views of Phoenix Island, though you will need to commute back and forth to the island daily (approx. a 10-minute drive).

2. Hotels in Sanya City Center: Convenient transportation access and a wide array of dining options, making them ideal for travelers with a limited budget or those planning to visit multiple attractions.
