The Min River—Fuzhou’s Mother River

The Min River, Fujian’s largest waterway, originates in the Wuyi Mountains. It winds its way through the peaks of northern Fujian before flowing through Fuzhou and finally emptying into the East China Sea. Far more than just a geographical feature, the Min River serves as the very lifeblood and soul of Fuzhou—an ancient metropolis with a history spanning over 2,200 years. In the late Warring States period, Wuzhu—a descendant of the Minyue people—led his clan to establish the Minyue Kingdom here, designating Dongye (present-day Fuzhou) as its capital. These early ancestors, renowned for their "affinity with the water," utilized dugout canoes to carve out the very first aquatic routes across the Min River basin. Later, during the Tang Dynasty, Wang Shenzhi established the Gantang Port, thereby elevating the Min River to the status of a vital artery along the Maritime Silk Road. For centuries, the Min River has nurtured this land, bearing witness to the profound transformations of Fuzhou and serving as a vessel for the nostalgic memories of countless Fuzhou natives.

Min River Night Cruise—From "Mother River" to the City's Grand Reception Hall

Operated by Fujian Bafang Marine Passenger Transport Co., Ltd., the Min River Night Cruise launched in 2009 and has since evolved into a benchmark project for Fuzhou's nighttime economy. In late 2024, the "Min River Night Cruise" route was selected by China's Ministry of Transport as a "Typical Case of High-Quality Domestic Waterway Tourism Passenger Routes"—making it the only authentic Min River cruise route in Fuzhou to receive this prestigious honor. During the 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, the Min River Night Cruise welcomed over 20,000 passengers, emerging as a "dark horse" in Fuzhou's cultural and tourism market. From its past role as a vital "golden waterway" for the transport of goods, the Min River has transformed into a dazzling, resplendent "grand reception hall" for the city; the Min River Night Cruise serves as a vivid microcosm of the comprehensive quality upgrades implemented along Fuzhou's "Two Rivers and Four Banks" urban landscape.

A Feast of Light—The Haixi 3D Light Show

The quintessential experience of the Min River Night Cruise is undoubtedly the Haixi 3D Light Show. Located within the Strait Financial Business District—adjacent to the Aofeng Bridge—this spectacular light display encompasses 11 buildings on the northern bank, 10 buildings on the southern bank, and the Aofeng Bridge itself.

A Symphonic Poem of Light and Shadow

Utilizing advanced domestic architectural animation technology, the light show employs full-color lighting fixtures installed across the facades of high-rise buildings. These fixtures generate a display of 800,000 pixel points, creating vibrant visual animations that feature stunning "naked-eye 3D" effects. The show is structured into three distinct chapters, each defined by a dominant color palette—ecological green, vibrant orange, and high-tech blue—seamlessly blending the two-dimensional nighttime cityscape with the three-dimensional architectural complex. Cultural icons steeped in Fuzhou’s essence—including banyan trees, jasmine flowers, the Fudao boardwalk, the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, the "Three Mountains, Two Pagodas, and One River" landscape, and the "Three Treasures of Fuzhou" (oil-paper umbrellas, ox-horn combs, and Shoushan stone)—unfold in succession. Amidst a breathtaking interplay of light and shadow, these elements dynamically showcase the humanistic history, famous landmarks, and developmental achievements of this thousand-year-old capital of Min. Aboard a sightseeing boat, visitors feel as though they are drifting through a "moving urban movie," gaining a panoramic overview of the past and present of the "Banyan City."

Best Viewing Times: The light show runs every evening from Tuesday to Sunday at 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, and 21:30 (closed on Mondays for routine maintenance). The viewing experience reaches its climax when the boat sails into the waters surrounding the Strait Financial Business District. Photography Tips: It is recommended to use a tripod or handheld stabilizer and to increase your camera's ISO sensitivity to capture the dreamy, flowing effects of the light and shadow.

Waterborne Landmarks: A Pilgrimage to the Coordinates of Fuzhou’s Memory

Zhongzhou Island: A European-Style Fantasy—The Pearl of Nantai

Zhongzhou Island is a sandbar situated in the Min River, located at the junction of the Taijiang and Cangshan districts. Revered as the "Pearl of Nantai," it ranks among Fuzhou’s top ten scenic attractions. The island features massive structures built in a classical European architectural style and is connected to both banks of the river by the Jiefang Bridge. As night falls, Zhongzhou Island becomes brilliantly illuminated; from a distance, it resembles a colossal luxury liner moored in the Min River, appearing even more mesmerizing and resplendent under the glow of the evening lights. Many visitors remark that standing on the boat's deck and gazing toward Zhongzhou Island evokes a sense of stepping back in time—as if they have momentarily been transported to Europe.

Jiefang Bridge: The Historical Echoes of a Thousand-Year-Old Pontoon

The predecessor of the Jiefang Bridge was a pontoon bridge originally constructed by Wang Zudao, the Prefect of Fuzhou during the Song Dynasty—a structure with a history spanning over a thousand years. On August 17, 1949, the People's Liberation Army crossed the river via this bridge under artillery fire, successfully liberating the city of Fuzhou. To commemorate the immortal deeds of these people's heroes, the bridge—following its subsequent expansion—was officially named the Jiefang Bridge (Liberation Bridge). The current Jiefang Bridge, reconstructed in 1996, spans 426.92 meters in length. Comprising three distinct sections—Wanshou Bridge, Zhongzhou Island, and Jiangnan Island—it embodies a rare and unique architectural style characterized by "bridges linking bridges" and "bridges built upon bridges." As night falls and the lights illuminate, Jiefang Bridge stretches across the Min River like a magnificent rainbow, dazzling the eye with its brilliance.

Gushan Bridge and Aofengzhou Bridge: A Dialogue Between Modernity and Tradition

Gushan Bridge and Aofengzhou Bridge serve as vital crossings across the lower reaches of the Min River; adorned with evening illumination, each bridge reveals its own distinct charm. Gushan Bridge utilizes dynamic lighting to highlight its structural features, creating a harmonious sequence of light and shadow in concert with the upstream Kuipu Bridge. Tour boats turn around near Gushan Bridge, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of modern bridge engineering up close from a unique waterside perspective.

Panshanchu Catholic Church: The Serene Beauty of a Century-Old Sanctuary

Once a bustling wharf where foreign merchant vessels docked, Panshanchu Catholic Church still stands serenely on the southern bank of the Min River today. Under the cover of night, the church's Gothic spires appear solemn and majestic against the backdrop of its illumination. Standing in stark contrast to the modern high-rises lining the riverbanks, it adds a touch of unique, exotic flair to the Min River's nocturnal landscape.

The nightscape of the Min River offers an experience that goes far beyond mere "sightseeing"—it is equally about "listening" and "feeling." As the river breeze caresses your face and the water murmurs softly, the lights from the banks shimmer in reflection upon the rippling surface of the river; here, the bustle of the city and the tranquility of the flowing water blend together in perfect harmony.

Photography Tips:

The best vantage point for capturing panoramic shots is from the center of the tour boat's second-floor deck, allowing you to frame both the architecture on the riverbanks and their reflections on the water simultaneously. The optimal angle for photographing Zhongzhou Island is as the boat approaches Jiefang Bridge, where the composition—featuring the European-style architecture framed alongside the bridge—is truly superb. For capturing the 3D light shows, it is recommended to use video mode to record the dynamic interplay of light and shadow. As the tour boat maintains a steady course, drone flight is prohibited over the navigation channels; for drone photography, it is recommended to operate from designated areas along the riverbanks.

Five Must-Do Activities to Unlock the Complete Min River Journey

1. Catch a "Naked-Eye" 3D Light Show

Time: Throughout the entire night cruise; the light show's climax occurs between 19:30 and 21:30.

Location: The second-deck observation area offers the best vantage point.

Experience: Iconic Fuzhou elements—such as banyan trees, jasmine flowers, and the historic Three Lanes and Seven Alleys—play out in rotation across the high-rises lining the riverbanks. No 3D glasses are required to experience this immersive visual spectacle. We recommend bringing along some jasmine tea to sip while you watch, allowing your visual and gustatory senses to wander in harmony.

2. Savor a Pot of Jasmine Tea and Listen to Traditional Music

Highlight: The standard night cruise ticket includes complimentary self-service jasmine tea and live traditional music performances.

Experience: A dedicated tea-tasting area is located within the cabin. The fragrant and refreshing Fuzhou jasmine tea, paired with live performances on traditional instruments like the guzheng (zither) and pipa (lute), adds a touch of elegance to your journey on the water. The premium "Min River Parlor"—a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly vessel—incorporates creative architectural elements such as "saddle-back walls" and "Qingyun ladders," alongside Fuzhou cultural symbols like jasmine flowers and oil-paper umbrellas, creating a unique "Ancient Mansion on the River" theme.

3. Take a Cross-River Ferry Ride for a Seamless Land-and-Water Tour

Highlight: The Cangxia–Yantaishan ferry route serves as a link connecting two major historical and cultural districts: Shangxiahang and Yantaishan.

Experience: Spend the day strolling through the century-old Western-style mansions of Yantaishan; in the evening, take the ferry across the river to explore the ancient merchant guildhalls of Shangxiahang; finally, board the night cruise ship to enjoy the light show, completing a perfect loop where you "view the nightscape from the water and explore ancient streets on land."

4. Feast on an Authentic Fuzhou-Style Banquet

Pre-Boarding Recommendation: The area surrounding Taijiang Pier is home to numerous historic Fuzhou eateries. Highlights include Tongli Rouyan (Meat Swallows)—featuring wrappers as thin as paper and a clear, flavorful broth; Yonghe Fish Balls—tender and delightfully springy in texture; and Peanut Soup—sweet yet not cloying, melting instantly in the mouth. The cruise operator has also partnered with "Juchunyuan"—a century-old Fuzhou culinary institution—to offer a special "Fuzhou Banquet" dining experience, which can be booked in advance.

5. Capture a Stunning Series of Min River Night Photos

Best Time: The "Blue Hour" just after sunset (approx. 18:30–19:00), when the lingering twilight in the sky harmonizes beautifully with the city lights.

Best Vantage Points: The stern of the second-deck (framing both Zhongzhou Island and Jiefang Bridge); the ship's sides (capturing the reflections of the riverside architecture); and the bow (offering a perspective of the Gushan Bridge).

Clothing Suggestions: Light-colored clothing stands out best against the night scenery. In winter, be mindful of strong winds on the river; bringing a jacket is recommended.

How to Get There: A Seamless Connection Guide

The boarding pier for the Min River Night Cruise is conveniently located in the Taijiang District, right in the heart of Fuzhou City.

Traveling from other parts of the country? We recommend taking a High-Speed Train (G-train) to either Fuzhou Station or Fuzhou South Station. Upon arrival, transfer to Fuzhou Metro Line 1 and ride to Dadao Station (C Exit); from there, it is just a 10-minute walk to the Taijiang Pier.

Traveling from within Fuzhou City? We recommend taking Metro Line 1 to Dadao Station, followed by a walk of approximately 970 meters.

Public Bus Routes: You can take buses such as Route 10, 50, 136, 312, or 319 and alight at the "Taijiang Cinema" stop (Taijiang Dianyingyuan), followed by a walk of about 200 meters. Alternatively, take Route 1, 6, or 14 to the "Anping Residential Area" stop (Anping Xiaoqu), followed by a walk of about 329 meters.

Driving: Use your GPS navigation to search for "Min River Cruise Taijiang Pier" (Minjiang You Taijiang Pier) or "Dongbai Yuanhong City." Parking is available in the underground garage at Dongbai Yuanhong City.

Important Reminder: After the final night cruise departures (typically after 21:30), Metro Line 1 continues to operate until approximately 22:30. However, public bus frequency decreases significantly during these late hours; we recommend planning your return transportation in advance or utilizing a ride-hailing service.

Best Time to Visit

The Min River Night Cruise is enjoyable year-round, but the spring and autumn seasons offer the absolute best visiting experience.

Spring & Autumn "Golden Seasons" (March–May; September–November): The climate is pleasant, the river breeze is refreshing, and visibility is high—making these the ideal seasons for a night cruise. Autumn (particularly October) features clear skies, providing the perfect backdrop for viewing the spectacular light shows.

Summer "Cooling-Off Season" (June–August): The river surface offers a cool respite from the summer heat. However, please note that typhoon activity is common during the summer months; cruise operations may be suspended in the event of severe weather. We recommend checking the weather forecast and confirming cruise schedule updates in advance. Winter (December–February) — The Quiet Season: Visitor numbers are lower, the river surface is tranquil, and the illuminated cityscape appears even more dazzling. Warm outerwear is essential, as the wind on the deck can be brisk. Winter is the driest season of the year, offering a higher frequency of clear, sunny days.

Summary: Fuzhou experiences four distinct seasons, with spring and autumn being the most ideal times to visit. Regardless of the season, we recommend booking your boat tickets 1–2 days in advance; for public holidays, booking even further in advance is advised.
