Anhui’s Unique Culinary Delight

Anhui cuisine, known for its harmonious blend of sweet and savory flavors, features signature dishes like Braised Pork with Sweet Soy Sauce, Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish, and Lotus Seed Soup, offering a rich and comforting dining experience rooted in the region's natural ingredients.

Anhui Cuisine, known for its deep, earthy flavors, strikes a perfect balance between sweet and savory. The region’s food culture is deeply rooted in its natural environment, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients from its mountainous terrain, rivers, and forests. The fusion of sweet and savory flavors in Anhui’s culinary tradition creates a rich and comforting dining experience. Here are some of the province’s beloved sweet and savory dishes:

1. Braised Pork with Sweet Soy Sauce (红烧肉)

Braised pork is a signature dish of Anhui, and it perfectly blends sweetness with savory depth. The pork belly is simmered slowly in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, and aromatic spices. The result is a dish that combines the sweetness of caramelized sugar with the umami richness of soy sauce, producing a glossy and tender pork that melts in the mouth. It’s both sweet and savory, with a luscious texture that’s hard to resist.

2. Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish (糖醋桂花鱼)

Mandarin fish, a freshwater species found in Anhui’s rivers, is commonly prepared in a sweet and sour sauce. This dish combines the tender, flaky fish with a tangy sauce made of sugar, vinegar, and soy sauce, creating a vibrant contrast of flavors. The balance between sweetness and acidity makes this dish a standout in Anhui cuisine, offering both freshness and a punch of flavor.

3. Lotus Seed Soup (莲子汤)

Lotus seeds, a staple ingredient in Chinese desserts, are often used in Anhui to create soothing, sweet soups. The lotus seeds are simmered with rock sugar and sometimes with other ingredients like lily bulbs or longan. The result is a sweet, light dessert soup that’s gentle on the palate and perfect as a refreshing end to a meal.

4. Steamed Baozi with Sweet Red Bean Paste (红豆包)

Anhui's take on baozi (steamed buns) is often filled with sweet red bean paste, offering a delightful contrast to the more savory fillings found in other parts of China. The soft, fluffy baozi is filled with sweet, smooth red bean paste, providing a perfect balance of texture and flavor. These buns are often enjoyed as a snack or breakfast item and are a common feature in Anhui’s street food scene.

5. salted duck with Sweet Herbs (香草盐水鸭)

A unique dish from Anhui, this salted duck combines savory saltiness with sweet herbs, creating a delicate flavor profile. The duck is marinated in a brine made from herbs, sugar, and salt, and then slow-cooked until tender. The sweetness of the herbs complements the salty flavor of the duck, resulting in a dish that has a complex and satisfying taste.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
