Origins: Ancient Legends and a Photography Holy Land

The Name "Xianggong"—Resemblance to an Official's Hat and Ancient Folklore

The name "Xianggong Mountain" stems from two captivating narratives. The first suggests the name was inspired by the mountain's physical shape, which bears a striking resemblance to an ancient "Xianggong"—a high-ranking official—wearing a traditional black gauze cap and formal robes; locals also affectionately refer to it as "Hebao Mountain" (Purse Mountain). The second origin lies in a piece of local folklore: long ago, a massive mountain known as "Golden Ox Mountain" stood behind the village. One bitterly cold winter, a pair of remarkably lifelike pumpkins miraculously sprouted on the mountainside, drawing crowds of villagers eager to witness this extraordinary sight. Suddenly, as that pair of pumpkins swayed, they emitted bursts of fiery light; the mountain gates swung wide open, and a golden-hued ox, radiating brilliant light, stepped forth. It declared that this mountain held a treasure which it had been tasked to guard for many years. Now that the local people lived in happiness and prosperity, it announced its intention to return to the heavens to make its report, and proclaimed that, from this day forward, this mountain would be renamed "Xianggong Mountain." To this day, two massive boulders remain at the foot of the mountain—one known as the "Lying Ox Stone" and the other as the "Drinking Ox Stone"—both revered as sacred stones.

A Journey of Rebirth: From Nameless Hill to Photographic Sanctuary

The modern saga of Xianggong Mountain is a legend unearthed by photography enthusiasts and brought to fame by the sheer beauty of its landscapes:

- Years of Obscurity: Xianggong Mountain was once merely a nameless hill; originally, there were no paths on its slopes, and only local villagers occasionally ventured to its summit.

- Discovery by Photographers (2000s): Photography enthusiasts discovered this exceptional vantage point overlooking the Li River. Specifically to capture the sunrise and the "sea of clouds," they carved a path up the mountain; initially, the fee for ascending was a mere 5 yuan.

- Rising to Fame (2010s): A photograph taken here by a Guilin-based photographer won the Bronze Award at the 10th International Photography Exhibition. Consequently, Xianggong Mountain’s reputation spread far and wide, establishing it as a "must-visit" pilgrimage site within the photography community.

- Regulated Development (2020s): The scenic area gradually improved its infrastructure, constructing stone stairways and multi-tiered viewing platforms while standardizing ticket management. Crucially, it preserved the mountain’s pristine, natural charm, becoming the premier destination for visitors seeking a panoramic, bird's-eye view of the entire Li River.

Must-See Wonders: A Symphonic Poem of Nature and Humanity

Nature's Masterpiece: A "God's-Eye View" from the Summit of the Li River

The natural scenery of Xianggong Mountain represents an eternal dialogue between mountains, water, and the interplay of light and shadow.

The Li River's First Bend: A Jade Ribbon Winding Through the Peaks

Upon reaching the summit of Xianggong Mountain, the most breathtaking spectacle of all is undoubtedly the "Li River's First Bend." Gazing into the distance, the Li River traces a graceful arc within the embrace of the surrounding mountains, resembling a jade-green ribbon winding its way through the karst peaks. The river waters are as clear as a mirror, reflecting the emerald hills on both banks; occasionally, tour boats or bamboo rafts glide slowly across the surface, adding a touch of lively dynamism to the tranquil landscape. This particular bend of the river serves as the most vivid embodiment of the poetic lines: "The river is a sash of green silk; the mountains are hairpins of jade."

Karst Peaks: An Ordered Symphony of Landscape

Along the banks of the Li River, peaks rise in dense clusters, arranged with a sense of order that evokes a silent symphony orchestra. Shaped by the long-term erosive processes of karst topography, these peaks assume a myriad of forms—some are precipitous and sharp, as if hewn by a knife or axe; others are rounded like a camel's hump; while still others resemble deities, brush rests, or massive ships setting sail. Shimmering faintly amidst the morning mist and mirrored perfectly in the shimmering waters, these peaks compose a magnificent tableau that truly captures the essence of "mountains like hairpins of jade."

Seas of Clouds and Rosy Hues: Gifts from the Magician of Light and Shadow

Xianggong Mountain is perhaps most renowned for its morning sunrises and seas of clouds. When the first rays of sunlight pierce through the clouds to bathe the peaks and the river below, the mist rising from the valleys is painted in hues of gold. The peaks emerge and recede within this sea of clouds like islands in the sky, creating a scene straight out of a fairyland. Following a rain shower, the sea of clouds becomes even more spectacular; layer upon layer of mist intertwines with the ink-wash-style peaks, resembling a living rendition of the A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains scroll painting. To capture this fleeting moment, photography enthusiasts often set out to climb the mountain as early as 4:00 AM.

Photography Tips: The optimal time for photography is around sunrise (approximately 5:30 AM to 7:30 AM, varying by season). It is recommended to use a wide-angle lens to capture panoramic views and a telephoto lens to capture intricate details. Sunrise occurs around 7:00 AM in winter and around 5:30 AM in summer. The mountaintop can be quite windy, so be sure to bring warm clothing.

Humanistic Craftsmanship — Viewing Platforms and Mountain Living

While the cultural landscape of Xiangong Mountain may not be elaborate, it everywhere embodies the wisdom of living in harmony with nature.

Four-Tiered Viewing Platforms: Ensuring Everyone Can Overlook the Li River

Xiangong Mountain features a system of four tiered viewing platforms, ascending sequentially from bottom to top; each level offers a distinct vantage point and experience. The uppermost platform boasts the most expansive panoramic view, serving as the prime "center stage" spot for capturing the full panorama of the "First Bend of the Li River." The middle-tier platforms are ideal for shots that blend portraits with the surrounding scenery, while the lower platforms offer unique angles for capturing reflections on the river's surface. The entire trail consists of stone steps with an elevation gain of just over 100 meters, making the summit easily accessible for visitors of all ages—from the elderly to young children.

Farmhouses and Guesthouses at the Foot of the Mountain: Daily Life Integrated with Nature

Scattered across the foot of Xiangong Mountain are several local farmhouses and guesthouses, offering authentic Northern Guangxi cuisine and simple, rustic accommodations. Before embarking on an early-morning hike, you can grab a piping hot breakfast from a small stall at the mountain base; after descending, you can dine at a farmhouse restaurant—savoring local specialties like Bamboo-Tube Chicken and Stuffed River Snails—to fully immerse yourself in the leisurely pace and tranquility of mountain living.

An Extension of Xingping Ancient Town: A Thousand Years of Memories by the Li River

After descending from Xiangong Mountain, you can take a ferry across the river to visit Xingping Ancient Town. This thousand-year-old settlement retains the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, featuring cobblestone streets, deep-set alleys lined with historic homes, and the famous "Yellow Cloth Reflection"—the very spot depicted on the back of the 20-yuan banknote. It is an excellent destination for experiencing the rich cultural history and humanistic heritage of the Li River region.

> Photography Tips:

The best vantage point for panoramic shots is the uppermost viewing platform, which allows you to capture both the First Bend of the Li River and the surrounding mountain peaks in a single frame.

If you plan to photograph the sunrise, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a prime spot; a tripod is an absolute necessity.

The period immediately following a rain shower—once the skies have cleared—offers the highest probability of witnessing a "sea of clouds," a rare and serendipitous phenomenon.

Drone flight is permitted in this area, allowing you to capture even more breathtaking "God's-eye-view" perspectives.

Five Must-Do Activities to Unlock the Complete Xiangong Mountain Experience

1. Chase the Sunrise and Sea of Clouds

- Timing: Varies by season—typically around 5:30 AM in summer and 7:00 AM in winter. It is recommended to arrive at the foot of the mountain one hour in advance.

- Experience: Join a group of fellow enthusiasts on the observation deck to wait in quiet anticipation. Watch as the sky transitions from darkness to light, witness the sea of clouds surging beneath you, and see the first rays of sunlight illuminate the karst peaks—the emotion of that moment is truly indescribable.

- Tip: If hiking up in the early morning hours, be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight, as there are no streetlights along the mountain path.

2. Capture a Panoramic Masterpiece of the Li River

- Camera Angles: Use the top-level observation deck for panoramic shots; the middle level is ideal for portraits; and the steps leading down offer a great vantage point for shooting the lines of the karst peaks from a low angle.

- Attire: Light-colored clothing—preferably cotton, linen, or denim—is recommended; when the breeze blows, the look is instantly cinematic.

- Tip: You can get great shots using just your smartphone, but bringing a dedicated camera will yield even better results.

3. Explore Xingping Ancient Town

- Experience: After descending from Xiangong Mountain, take a ferry to the Lengshui Village Pier, then proceed to Xingping Ancient Town. Snap a photo at the "Yellow Cloth Reflection" spot—the iconic backdrop featured on the 20 RMB banknote—and spend some time strolling through the old streets and sampling local snacks.

- Recommendations: Songhuatang (Pine Flower Candy) on Xingping Old Street (5–10 RMB per bag) and Sister Liu's Beer Fish (approx. 50 RMB per person).

4. Savor an Authentic Feast of Northern Guangxi Flavors

- Must-Order Dishes: Yangshuo Beer Fish (Li River Maogu fish slow-braised in beer), Stuffed River Snails (minced snail meat mixed with pork and stuffed back into the shells), Bamboo Tube Chicken (infused with the fresh fragrance of bamboo), and Guilin Rice Noodles.

- Recommended Venues: Farmhouse-style restaurants at the foot of the mountain (such as Xiang Zhi Wei Tu Cai Guan) or eateries located within Xingping Old Street.

5. Take a Bamboo Raft Ride on the Li River

- Experience: Board a bamboo raft from Xingping Pier to cruise along the Li River, admiring iconic sights such as the Nine-Horse Mural Hill and the Reflection of Yellow Cloth Shoal up close, and immersing yourself in the poetic imagery of "drifting upon emerald waters, as if floating through a painting."

- Tip: The bamboo raft experience departing from the Shuiedi Pier is considered the best; however, tickets are highly sought-after and difficult to secure, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Transport, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

How to Get There: A Seamless Connection Guide

Xianggong Mountain has no direct public transportation; carpooling, private charter services, or self-driving are the primary options.

From Yangshuo Town Center: Carpooling or self-driving is recommended, with a travel time of approximately 40–60 minutes. Hotels near West Street often offer bookings for dedicated sunrise carpool services; these typically cost around 85 RMB per person (including the entrance ticket) and provide door-to-door pickup in the early morning hours. If driving yourself, navigate to "Xianggong Mountain Scenic Area." The scenic area offers free parking, but please exercise caution during the final 3 kilometers, which consist of winding mountain roads.

From Xingping Ancient Town: Take a ferry from Xingping Pier to Lengshui Village (approx. 15 RMB per person), then transfer to a local vehicle to reach Xianggong Mountain (approx. 50 RMB per vehicle, round-trip). You can also visit the Nine-Horse Mural Mountain (Jiuma Huashan) along the way. Alternatively, you can charter a private vehicle directly from Xingping; the drive takes about 30 minutes.

From Guilin City Center: Drive yourself or charter a private vehicle; the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. You may also take the high-speed train to Yangshuo Station (Xingping) first, and then proceed using the methods described above.

Important Return Trip Note: If you are visiting for the sunrise, your return carpool service will typically pick you up after you have descended the mountain. If you choose to explore Xingping Ancient Town on your own, you will need to arrange your own ferry and vehicle transfers; it is advisable to confirm your return arrangements in advance.

Best Time to Visit

Xianggong Mountain offers beautiful scenery in every season, though each possesses a distinct character. The best times to visit are during the spring and autumn, as well as during the summer following a rainfall. These periods offer the highest probability of encountering a "sea of clouds," and the sunrise glow is at its most magnificent.

- Spring & Autumn: The Golden Seasons (March–May; September–November): The climate is pleasant, and visibility is excellent, making these the ideal times for photography and outdoor activities.

- Summer: The Sea of Clouds Season (June–August): Temperatures are higher during this period; however, the "sea of clouds" is at its most spectacular on clear days immediately following rain—offering the perfect opportunity to capture the iconic "Panoramic River and Mountain" vista. Be sure to pack rain gear and sun protection. - Winter Quiet Season (Dec–Feb): Visitor numbers are low, and sunrise occurs later in the day (approx. 7:00 AM), making it ideal for travelers who prefer not to wake up too early. Note that some local guesthouses (farmstays) may be closed during this period.

Recommended Times: Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) is the prime time for capturing the sunrise; late afternoon (5:30–6:30 PM) offers the opportunity to photograph the warm glow of the sunset. Special Note: Visiting on overcast days is not recommended; without a visible sunrise, the value-for-money of a trip to Xiangong Mountain is significantly diminished.

Accommodation Options

Accommodation choices in the immediate vicinity of the Xiangong Mountain Scenic Area are limited. Travelers may choose to stay near the scenic area or in Yangshuo Town, depending on their itinerary.

- Best For: Photography enthusiasts and travelers who wish to avoid early-morning commutes.

Xingping Ancient Town:

- Experience: A wider range of options is available here, ranging from hostel dormitory beds (50 RMB/person) to boutique guesthouses (80–100 RMB/night). You can also conveniently explore the ancient town during your stay.

- Transport: The following day, you will need to take a ferry followed by a vehicle ride to reach Xiangong Mountain (approx. 1 hour total), or hire a private car for a direct transfer.

- Best For: Travelers planning an in-depth exploration of Xingping Ancient Town.

Yangshuo Town (Widest Selection):

- Experience: Accommodation options run the gamut from budget-friendly inns to high-end hotels. The area near West Street is lively and convenient, while the banks of the Yulong River offer a quiet, poetic atmosphere.

- Best For: Travelers planning to visit multiple attractions in Yangshuo who have higher standards regarding accommodation quality.
