Nature's Creation: Shanghai's Bamboo Forest and Panoramic Views
The natural beauty of Sheshan lies in its fresh and tranquil forest ecology and the expansive view from its summit.
- A sea of lush bamboo: Dongshe Mountain, in particular, is famous for its over 800 acres of bamboo forest. The mountain is covered with bamboo groves, verdant and diverse in species, evergreen throughout the year. Strolling along the secluded bamboo paths, with the gentle breeze rustling the bamboo leaves, is the perfect way to experience a "mountain forest bath" and wash away the hustle and bustle of city life. In spring, you can also seek out the "Orchid Bamboo Shoots," a variety bestowed by the emperor.
- A high vantage point overlooking Shanghai: As one of the few remaining forested areas in Shanghai, climbing to the top of the East Sheshan Observation Tower or the West Sheshan Viewing Platform offers a breathtaking panoramic view. While lacking dramatic peaks or spectacular scenery, it provides a complete view of the Sheshan National Tourist Resort, the numerous lakes scattered throughout, and the distant city skyline, offering a sense of exhilarating grandeur.
- Xiudaozhe Pagoda and Hidden Mountain Retreats: Located on the eastern slope of West Sheshan Mountain, Xiudaozhe Pagoda is an ancient pagoda built in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is nestled among trees, quiet and rustic. There are also attractions such as Qilongyan and Xianrendong in the mountains, adding a touch of wildness and cultural imagination to hiking and exploration.
Humanistic Ingenuity: The Dome of Faith and the Eye of Science
The cultural landscape of Sheshan is particularly dazzling due to its unique background of "Western learning spreading to the East", forming the spectacle of "a cross and a mirror reflecting the sky coexisting on one mountain".
- Sheshan Basilica (The Largest Cathedral in the Far East): This magnificent building, perched atop West Sheshan Mountain and incorporating traditional Chinese elements, was completed in 1935 and is known as the "Largest Cathedral in the Far East." Its red brick walls, green glazed tiles, and 38-meter-high bell tower are unforgettable. The interior can accommodate 3,000 people, and its stained-glass windows and exquisite icons create a solemn and sacred atmosphere. Every May, during the "Sheshan Our Lady Month," the throngs of believers create a truly spectacular sight.
- Sheshan Observatory and Seismograph Station: Adjacent to the church is the Sheshan Observatory. Its rustic European-style building houses precious instruments, including a century-old 40cm binocular refracting telescope, witnessing the beginnings of modern Chinese astronomy. The adjacent seismograph station is one of China's earliest earthquake observation points. Not only is it a scientific sanctuary, but its observation platform also offers a superb panoramic view.
- Sheshan Monastery and Zhongshan Church: Located halfway up the mountain, Sheshan Monastery is a grand monastery building, once the largest in East Asia. Zhongshan Church (also known as "Zhongtang") at the foot of the mountain is the starting point for pilgrimages, forming a complete pilgrimage space sequence with the main hall at the top of the mountain.
- Centuries-old stone carvings and historical echoes: Many stone tablets and carvings are scattered along the mountain road, such as the fourteen Stations of the Cross on the "Prayer Road", which record religious history and add cultural exploration fun to the mountain climbing.
Photography Tips:
The best panoramic view of the church is from the southern slope of Dongsheshan or near the observatory, where you can capture the classic image of the Basilica of Our Lady standing atop the verdant mountain.
> Bamboo Forest Portraits: Dongsheshan Bamboo Sea, using light and shadow to capture fresh or Zen-like photos;
> Interior Space: Use a wide-angle lens to photograph the magnificent dome and colonnades inside the church (please observe the silence etiquette);
Night views and starry skies: When the weather is excellent, the old observatory site is a unique location for photographing the starry sky on the edge of the city.
