The Name of the Lake—A White Sea Guarded by a Goddess

"Chaka" is a Tibetan term meaning "salt pond" or "the Sea of Green Salt." Local Mongol nomads, however, refer to it as "Ama Tsam-tso Garmu," meaning "Mother Salt Lake," believing that the lake is home to a goddess named Muyuoluosangma. Legend has it that in ancient times, the Chaka region was strewn with gold, silver, and precious gems. Mountain deities and demons waged ceaseless wars against one another to seize these treasures, causing immense suffering among the common people. When the Queen Mother of the West passed through this region and witnessed the suffering and devastation afflicting the inhabitants, she wept in sorrow. She commanded the Celestial God of Water to release a flood that submerged the hidden treasures beneath the waters of the lake. She then dispatched a thousand celestial maidens to guard the site day and night, awaiting the arrival of the day when the salt lake would finally bring blessings to humanity. Another version of the legend recounts the spiritual guidance offered by a Living Buddha: confronted with the plight of the Chaka region—which suffered from natural disasters nine years out of every ten—the Living Buddha revealed to the local herdsmen that the salt lake was home to a thousand goddesses. He explained that the crystalline blue salt found within the lake was the crystallized essence of their diligent labor and sweat, capable of bringing good fortune and well-being to the people. Consequently, every year on the 15th day of the fifth lunar month, Mongolian herdsmen from a radius of two hundred li (approximately 100 kilometers) gather at the lake. They bring offerings of pine and cypress branches, yak butter, highland barley, and Hadas (ceremonial silk scarves) to perform the Lake Worship Ceremony. During this ritual, they pay homage to the Salt Lake Goddess, Muyuoluosangma, and pray for favorable weather, bountiful harvests, and peace and prosperity for the nation. This Lake Worship Ceremony dates back to 1780, boasting a history of over 240 years; in 2006, it was officially inscribed on China's National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A Geological Epic: From Ancient Ocean to the "Mirror of the Sky"

The formation of Chaka Salt Lake represents a geological epic spanning hundreds of millions of years:

- Remnants of an Ancient Ocean (Approx. 240 million years ago): The collision and tectonic compression between the Eurasian Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate gave rise to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. As the ancient seas receded, pockets of seawater remained trapped in low-lying depressions; Chaka Salt Lake is one such remnant.

- Salt Layer Deposition (Approx. 100,000–130,000 years ago): As the plateau continued its gradual uplift, precipitation decreased while evaporation rates increased. Consequently, the surface area of the lake basin steadily shrank, leading to the continuous deposition of saline minerals and the formation of thick layers of rock salt. The average thickness of the salt layer at the lakebed reaches 4.9 meters, with the deepest sections extending up to 15 meters.

- A Marvel of Solid-Liquid Coexistence: Unlike arid salt flats, Chaka Salt Lake is a unique brine lake where solid and liquid states coexist. The lakebed consists of a hard, solid layer of rock salt, which is then covered by a shallow layer of brine (saltwater). It is precisely this thin layer of brine that endows Chaka Salt Lake with its unparalleled capacity for mirror-like reflection. - A Millennium of Mining History (to the Present): The history of salt mining at Chaka Salt Lake dates back to the Qin and Han Dynasties, boasting a mining heritage spanning over 3,000 years. The lake holds salt reserves totaling 450 million tons and is renowned for its abundant production of naturally crystallized "Daqing Salt."

Nature's Masterpiece—A Celestial Mirage on the Plateau

The essence of Chaka Salt Lake's natural beauty lies in "reflection"—an eternal dialogue between water, light, and the sky.

The "Mirror of the Sky": Earth's Poetic Reflection of the Heavens

The "Mirror of the Sky" phenomenon at Chaka Salt Lake is a gift bestowed by unique geological conditions. Unlike other salt lakes, Chaka is a brine lake where solid and liquid states coexist: the lakebed consists of a thick layer of rock salt, topped by a shallow sheet of brine. This shallow water acts as a natural liquid mirror with exceptional reflective properties, perfectly mirroring every cloud in the sky, every ray of light, and every contour of the surrounding snow-capped mountains onto the lake's surface. Standing on the salt crust, visitors appear to float upon the water—or even to be walking among the clouds. This offers an experience unique to Chaka Salt Lake: while other lakes typically require boat excursions for sightseeing, here you can step directly into the "mirror" itself.

- Optimal Viewing Conditions: To witness the perfect "Mirror of the Sky" effect, two conditions must be met: a clear, sunny day with minimal cloud cover, and wind speeds of less than Force 2. When the air is still, the lake surface becomes a flawless mirror; when a gentle breeze stirs, the resulting ripples create a different kind of dynamic, ethereal beauty.

Ringed by Snow-Capped Mountains: The Natural Frame for a Plateau Salt Lake

Unlike salt lakes situated within the stark landscapes of the Gobi Desert, Chaka Salt Lake is nestled amidst a breathtaking setting of snow-capped mountains and rolling grasslands. Encircled by the Qilian, Kunlun, and Xiangpi mountain ranges, majestic snow-capped peaks are mirrored in the lake’s glass-like waters, creating a magnificent tableau where "the lake merges with the boundless sky, and the salt lake gleams in harmony with the snowy peaks." In summer, lush green grass carpets the lakeshore, dotted with grazing cattle and sheep; here, the stark austerity of the snow mountains stands in vivid contrast to the vibrant vitality of the grasslands. In winter, a blanket of white snow covers the land, and the salt lake blends seamlessly with the snow mountains, as if nothing remains between heaven and earth but pure white and blue.

Mirror of the Night Sky: A Magical Salt Lake Realm Beneath the Stars

As night falls, Chaka Salt Lake transforms into "China’s Mirror of the Night Sky," earning the distinction of being named "China’s First and Most Beautiful Stargazing Photography Base." Situated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—far removed from the light pollution of urban centers—the night sky here is exceptionally clear and transparent, allowing the Milky Way to be seen with stunning clarity. Starlight reflects upon the tranquil lake surface, creating a dual spectacle: "a river of stars in the heavens, and a river of stars in the lake." If luck is on your side, you may even witness the fleeting moment a meteor streaks across the firmament, leaving a pair of parallel trails reflected in the mirror-like surface of the salt lake.

> Photography Tips:

> The classic vantage point is in the shallow waters at the center of the lake; shoot from a low angle—close to the water's surface—to create a seamless visual transition between the sky above and its reflection below.

> The tracks of the miniature train offer excellent opportunities for creating images with a strong sense of depth and extension; utilize an ultra-wide-angle lens to capture the visual effect of the rails stretching endlessly toward the horizon.

> The "golden hours" for photography are the one-hour windows immediately following sunrise and preceding sunset; during these times, the light is soft and the colors are rich, often rendering the lake's surface in hues of rose-gold or fiery orange-red.

> For the salt sculptures, it is recommended to use side lighting to better accentuate the texture and intricate layering of the salt crystals.

> When photographing reflections, remember to avoid frequent movement to ensure the water's surface remains undisturbed; to achieve a perfect mirror-like effect, choose a clear day with little to no wind.

> Drone flight is permitted, allowing you to capture panoramic aerial views of the salt lake and frame epic shots that feature the snow mountains, the salt lake, and the miniature train all within a single frame.

Human Ingenuity: Salt Crystal Sculptures—An Art of the Earth

Chaka Salt Lake is not merely a masterpiece of nature; it also serves as a canvas for human creativity. Across this vast expanse of white salt flats, artists have utilized salt as their medium and the lake as their backdrop to create a breathtaking array of salt sculpture art.

The World's Largest Outdoor Salt Sculpture Complex

Chaka Salt Lake is home to the world's largest outdoor salt sculpture complex, comprising three major thematic zones: the "Fairyland of the Jade Pool," the "Ancient Salt Horse Road," and "Chaka Romance." Crafted from naturally crystallized salt, these sculptures shimmer with a diamond-like luster under the high-altitude sunlight. Among the most iconic pieces are the monumental sculpture of Genghis Khan and the sculpture of the Queen Mother of the West—the latter completed in 2016 and inspired by the legend of Muyau Luosangma, the Goddess of the Salt Lake.

Chaka Romance: A Love-Themed Salt Sculpture Complex

Newly unveiled in 2025, the "Chaka Romance" salt sculpture complex stands as the scenic area's most romantic new landmark. Spanning over 9,000 square meters, the entire zone weaves a narrative centered on love, utilizing a harmonious color palette of pristine white salt, azure lake-blues, and vibrant "heartbeat pinks" to create five distinct thematic landscapes: the Ice Heart Castle, the Eternal Heart Valley, Sweetheart Hill, Heart-Hand Plaza, and the Wishing Tree.

- Ice Heart Castle: Standing 17 meters tall, this is the largest in scale and features the tallest individual sculpture within the "Chaka Romance" complex. Its pristine white spires and ramparts shimmer under the sunlight, evoking the image of a dreamlike palace rising from a world of ice and snow.

- Eternal Heart Valley: Centered around key features such as a clock tower, the "Wings of Romance," and heart-shaped seating, the clock tower serves as the focal point; with every tick of its hands, it whispers of the eternal flow of time.

- Sweetheart Hill: Themed around colorful dessert motifs—including candies, cakes, and donuts—this area features a heart-shaped platform reached by a flight of 19 steps, symbolizing the enduring longevity of true love.

- Heart-Hand Plaza: Standing at the very center of the plaza is a salt sculpture depicting a pair of hands forming the universal "heart" gesture. Its intricate, open-work structure lends the sculpture a visual lightness and ethereal beauty, making it a romantic landmark where couples can express their affection for one another.

Statue of the Goddess Muyuoluosangma

Erected at Chaka Salt Lake in 2009, the statue of the Goddess Muyuoluosangma stands 6.3 meters tall and weighs a massive 28 tons, carved entirely from pristine white marble. Modeled after a thangka painting of the goddess created 230 years ago by artists from Ta'er Monastery, the statue depicts the deity seated serenely upon a lotus throne. In her right hand, she holds a long, white-shafted feathered arrow—from the shaft of which hangs a magical mirror capable of observing all sentient beings in every direction—while her left hand cradles a bowl overflowing with jewels. This imagery symbolizes her compassionate vow to safeguard the peace of the region and to offer the treasures of the lake to all living beings.

The Retro Salt Lake Train

Deep within the scenic area, a small, rust-patinaed salt-transport train sits quietly alongside the tracks. This "veteran locomotive" from the 1980s once bore the heavy responsibility of transportation at Chaka Salt Lake; today, it has been transformed into a popular "Instagrammable" hotspot. Inside the carriages, displays feature vintage photographs and traditional salt-harvesting tools, while salt crystal ornaments adorn the windowsills, preserving the train's authentic industrial aesthetic. Boarding this retro train to venture deep into the heart of the lake—where the tracks stretch across the white salt flats toward the horizon, and an infinitely expanding white world unfolds outside the windows—offers the most evocative and ceremonial way to experience Chaka Salt Lake.

The Top 5 Must-Do Activities: Unlocking the Complete Chaka Experience

1. Capture Stunning Photos at the "Mirror of the Sky"

- Best Time: One hour after sunrise or 1–2 hours before sunset. During these times, the lighting is soft, reflections are at their clearest, and the lake surface often takes on a rosy-gold or orange-red hue.

- Best Photo Spots: The shallow waters in the center of the lake (use a low camera angle close to the water's surface); along the small train tracks (to create a sense of depth and extension); beside the salt sculptures (using side lighting to highlight texture); and at the Sunset Viewing Platform (to capture the orange-red mirror effect).

- Outfit Suggestions: High-saturation colors (such as red, yellow, or royal blue) stand out most vividly against the white backdrop of the salt lake, making for the most striking photos. Ankle-length dresses or skirts create a graceful, flowing effect that is ideal for capturing beautiful reflections. Be sure to bring a thick jacket, as the temperature difference between day and night on the plateau can exceed 20°C. - Photography Tips: Use a wide-angle lens or your mobile phone's HDR mode. When photographing reflections, try to minimize movement to keep the water's surface calm. Bringing a polarizing filter can help reduce glare on the lake's surface.

2. Ride the Vintage Train Through the Salt Flats

- Experience: Board a vintage-style train at the park entrance and ride all the way to the heart of the lake. Along the journey, snow-capped mountains and the white salt flats create a stunning interplay of scenery, while outside your window lies an endlessly stretching world of pristine purity. The park has expanded its fleet of rail trains to 20 units; some of the new carriages feature designs incorporating ecological elements unique to Qinghai—such as cartoon mascots of the "snow leopard" and "Pallas's cat."

- Recommended Route: Take the train directly to the innermost stop, "Chaka Snow Station," then disembark and explore the park from the inside out, stopping at each station along the way: Chaka Snow Station (for activities in the heart of the lake), Chaka Wind Station (featuring unique scenery and sculptures), Chaka Sunset Station (a popular spot for swing photos), and Chaka Salt Station (home to a cluster of giant salt sculptures).

- Tip: We recommend purchasing a combo ticket (which includes the train ride, boat ride, electric shuttle, shoe covers, and admission to the Salt Culture Museum) to save both time and effort.

3. Stroll Barefoot Through the Salt Lake

- Experience: Step into the salt lake—either wearing protective shoe covers or going barefoot—to feel the unique sensation of salt crystals beneath your feet. At its deepest points, the water reaches only below the knees, and the lakebed—composed of salt—is firm and level, ensuring a safe and worry-free experience. Standing in the center of the lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains with the reflection of the sky stretching out beneath your feet, you will feel as though you are floating between heaven and earth.

- Tip: It is crucial to avoid the areas containing salt lake sinkholes; the salt crust surrounding these sinkholes is relatively thin, so please maintain a safe distance when venturing into the lake. We do not recommend going completely barefoot, as the salt crystals can be sharp and may easily cut your feet; wearing protective shoe covers is the safer option.

4. Explore the Salt Sculpture Art Park

- Experience: Disembark at Chaka Salt Station to explore the three major salt sculpture themed zones: "Chaka Fairytale," "The Heavenly Lake," and "The Ancient Salt Road." Sculptural landscapes such as the "Ice Heart Castle," "Eternal Heart Valley," and "Heart-Hand Gesture Plaza" serve as magnificent backdrops for photos—particularly under side lighting, where the texture and depth of the salt crystals create a truly visually striking effect. - In-Depth Gameplay: The scenic area features an immersive "NPC Script-Murder Mystery" experience. Visitors can transform into "Mirror Spirit Messengers" and, guided by NPCs, decipher salt-sculpture codes and collect cultural tokens. This 3-hour investigative route weaves together the mythological system of the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing) with the geological mysteries of the salt lake.

- Fun Experiences: Participate in the "Salt Worker Skills Challenge," where you can step into the role of a traditional salt artisan and race against the clock to fill baskets with salt using traditional carrying frames and shovels.

5. Await the Salt Lake’s Starry Sky and Sunrise

- Stargazing Photography: Chaka Salt Lake has been designated "China's First and Most Beautiful Stargazing Photography Base." At night, the Milky Way is clearly visible, and its reflection on the lake's surface creates the spectacular phenomenon of a "Double Milky Way." We recommend bringing a tripod and a powerful flashlight; photography results are best on moonless nights or during the new moon phase.

- Sunrise Experience: Between 6:00 and 7:00 AM—within one hour after sunrise—the lake takes on a rosy-golden hue. The morning glow and the snow-capped mountains are mirrored in the water, creating vivid colors and high contrast—an ideal time to capture a dreamlike sunrise.

- Tip: If you plan to photograph the starry sky, we recommend staying at a hostel located either inside the scenic area or right at its entrance to facilitate easy access to the park during the night.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Transport, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

How to Get There: A Seamless Connection Guide

Tarka Salt Lake does not have its own airport; Xining City serves as the primary transit hub, and the scenic area offers direct tourist trains.

- Traveling from across the country: It is recommended to fly into Xining Caojiabao Airport or take a high-speed train to Xining Station, then transfer to a dedicated tourist train or long-distance bus bound for Tarka Salt Lake.

- Traveling from Xining: It is recommended to take the "Mirror of the Sky" tourist train (seasonal operation; a direct 4-hour journey to Tarka Station). Covering a distance of nearly 300 kilometers, the train departs in the morning and returns in the afternoon, offering a highly convenient travel option.

- Driving from Xining: Head west along the Beijing-Tibet Expressway (G6) for approximately 4 hours to reach the scenic area directly. The entire route is via expressway with excellent road conditions, and convenient parking facilities are available.

- Traveling from nearby attractions: Chartering a vehicle or self-driving is recommended. Distances to popular nearby destinations include: Qinghai Lake (approx. 1.5 hours), Qilian Mountains (approx. 4 hours), Dachaidan Emerald Lake (approx. 5 hours), and Dunhuang (approx. 7 hours). Tarka Salt Lake is a key waypoint on the "Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop" itinerary, making it an ideal destination to incorporate into a multi-stop tour.

Important Travel Advisory: Tarka Salt Lake sits at an elevation of 3,059 meters. Some visitors may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness; it is recommended to spend half a day to a full day acclimatizing in Xining before proceeding to the lake. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation at high altitudes is intense; be sure to take adequate sun protection measures—sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are absolute essentials. There is a significant temperature difference between day and night; even during the summer months, you should carry a windproof jacket or a lightweight down jacket.

Best Time to Visit

Tarka Salt Lake offers beautiful scenery in every season, though its atmosphere varies distinctly throughout the year. The best times to visit are during the summer and early autumn.

- Summer Peak Season (June–August): Temperatures are pleasant, and the water levels in the lake are abundant, resulting in the most spectacular "mirror effect." During this period, snow still lingers on the mountain peaks while the grasslands are lush and vibrant—making it the absolute best time to capture the iconic "snow-capped mountains + grasslands + salt lake" triple-landscape vista. However, this is also when visitor numbers are at their highest; to avoid the crowds, it is recommended to travel during off-peak hours or enter the park early in the morning. - Early Autumn Splendor Season (Sept–Oct): The weather is stable, winds are gentle, and visitor numbers are relatively low—making this the prime season for capturing perfect reflections. September, in particular, offers beautiful scenery with fewer crowds, providing excellent value for money. During this time, the grasslands gradually turn golden, creating a stunning color palette against the white salt lake and the blue sky.

- Spring Thaw Season (Apr–May): Visitors can admire views of snow-capped mountains as the lake surface begins to thaw; with very few tourists around, it is an ideal time for those seeking a tranquil and peaceful experience.

- Winter Serenity Season (Nov–Mar): The salt lake may be partially frozen or dried up, meaning the "mirror effect" is not as pronounced as in the summer or autumn; however, the lake possesses a unique, pristine beauty after a snowfall. During this period, admission tickets are priced at off-season rates, accommodation costs are low, and visitor numbers are extremely sparse. Note: Some facilities may be closed; please check the attraction's operating status before planning your trip.
