The name of the waterfall - the origin of "Huangguo"
The name "Huangguoshu" comes from a common plant in the local area. According to legend, this name is derived from the large number of Ficus microcarpa (commonly known as Huangjue tree in the local dialect, which sounds similar to "Huangguo") growing around the waterfall. Another way of saying it is more intuitive and romantic: during the rainy season, the rushing river carries up sediment and turns it into a murky yellow color, pouring down from high places like towering trees, hence the name "Huangguoshu". Regardless of its origin, this name has been closely associated with this magnificent landscape painting.

Famous Road - From Geographic Discoveries to Cultural Symbols
The Huangguoshu Waterfall is widely known as a history of natural wonders and cultural records that complement each other.
Geological incubation (billions of years): The formation of waterfalls began with crustal movement and river erosion. When the Baishui River flowed through this area, it encountered a huge karst fault, causing the river to suddenly fall. After millions of years of erosion and cutting, it formed the magnificent waterfall group and deep canyon it is today.
Initial Record of Writing (Ming Dynasty): Xu Xiake, a geographer and traveler of the Ming Dynasty, praised in his travelogue: "The pounding of pearls and the collapse of jade, the surging of droplets, and the soaring of smoke and mist, are extremely majestic and fierce... Among the waterfalls that I have seen, there are those that are several times higher and more steep, but never wider and larger." This is one of the earliest and most famous literary records about the Huangguoshu Waterfall, which has made it famous far and wide.
Cultural Empowerment (20th Century): In 1986, the CCTV version of the TV drama "Journey to the West" selected the steep slope pond waterfall in the Huangguoshu Waterfall group as the filming location for the ending song "Dare to Ask Where the Road is". The classic scene of Tang Monk and his disciples leading horses across the water has made the waterfall a common cultural memory for several generations of Chinese people.
World attention (from the 21st century to the present): As the flagship symbol of Guizhou tourism, Huangguoshu Waterfall has been rated as one of the first national 5A tourist attractions, and as an important part of the "South China Karst", it has been included in the United Nations World Natural Heritage List, attracting global attention.

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The charm of Huangguoshu Waterfall lies in its perfect combination of the ultimate dynamic of the waterfall and the static ingenuity of karst landforms, showcasing the all-around power of nature in the interweaving of water, stones, caves, and forests.
Natural Creation - Multidimensional Sonata of the Waterfall Family
The Huangguoshu Waterfall Group is a huge family, each with a distinct personality.
Huangguoshu Waterfall: the protagonist of thunderous thunder
This is the soul of the entire scenic area. Its charm lies in the multi-dimensional panoramic experience. From a distance, it can be seen that a huge amount of river water is pouring down like a Milky Way, with a sound shock of several miles and water mist rising hundreds of meters; For a close-up view, you need to follow the winding waterfall viewing trail down to the edge of Rhinoceros Pond, feel the negative oxygen ion water vapor rushing towards you, and experience the shock of nature in the roar. The best viewing time is during the summer and autumn rainy season (June to August), with abundant water and the most majestic atmosphere.
Shuilian Cave: The Fantasy World Behind the Waterfall
This is the unique and extraordinary feature of Huangguoshu Waterfall. A 134 meter long natural karst cave crosses the middle of the waterfall, consisting of 6 cave windows, 5 cave halls, 3 cave springs, and 6 passages. Entering the cave, looking out through the cave window, the rushing waterfall resembles a natural crystal curtain. Under the sunlight, a rainbow surrounds it, like a dream, making it the "most water curtain cave in the world".
Steep Slope Pond Waterfall: The widest memory of Journey to the West
Located 1 kilometer upstream of the Great Waterfall, with a top width of 105 meters, it is the widest waterfall in the Huangguoshu Waterfall group. The water flows evenly along the wide calcareous beach, like a white veil, creating a beautiful scenery. This is the filming location at the end of the 86th version of Journey to the West, full of classic film and television emotions.
Tianxingqiao Scenic Area and Silver Chain Waterfall: Exquisite Carvings of Underground Flow
Tianxingqiao Scenic Area is a concentrated display area of karst landforms, known for its wonderful scenery of "stones on the water, water on the stones, and trees growing on the stones". Its most essence scenic spot, Silver Chain Falling Pond Waterfall, is located at the underground river's undercurrent outlet. The river flows over the funnel shaped travertine beach, just like countless silver chains slowly falling into the deep pool, exquisite and beautiful, in sharp contrast to the powerful Huangguoshu Waterfall.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Ethnic Poetry and Painting between Mountains and Rivers
The mountains and waters here not only nurture wonders, but also nourish unique culture and art.
Buyi and Miao villages: wisdom of living with mountains and waters as neighbors
Surrounding the scenic area are villages of the Buyi and Miao ethnic groups, such as talc whistles and stone villages. These villages are surrounded by mountains and rivers, and the houses are mostly made of locally sourced stones, forming a unique culture of stone slab architecture. The villagers' handicrafts such as wax printing and embroidery are colorful and the patterns are quaint, which vividly reflect their national aesthetics and natural worship.
Waterfall historical sites and cliff carvings
On the cliffs around the waterfall, there are inscriptions by literati and poets from various dynasties. These stone carvings not only add cultural heritage to the natural landscape, but also record the astonishment and contemplation of people facing this natural wonder for hundreds of years.
Cultural imprint of Journey to the West
The steep slope pond waterfall is famous for the TV drama "Journey to the West", and the scenic area cleverly incorporates relevant cultural elements, allowing tourists to not only enjoy the natural scenery, but also evoke the classic cultural memory, completing a dual pilgrimage of nature and culture.

Photography tips:
The best panoramic camera position is on the waterfall viewing platform opposite the waterfall, where a wide-angle lens can be used to capture the full view of the waterfall and the water vapor rainbow.
The best creative location is inside the water curtain cave, shooting the waterfall water curtain from the inside out, with great dramatic tension.
The best light and shadow camera is located by the edge of Rhinoceros Pond, and in the afternoon, the side backlight can capture the texture of the waterfall water flowing like silver threads.
The Silver Chain Falling Pool Waterfall is suitable for shooting slow doors, pulling the gentle water flow into a silky shape.
Drone flights must strictly comply with the regulations of the scenic area, and panoramic shots of the waterfall group can be taken in the allowed areas.

Five Must Do Things to Unlock the Complete Journey of Huangguoshu
Wear a water curtain hole once
This is a unique experience for Huangguoshu. Prepare your raincoat, cross the waterfall waist by waist, feel the huge resonance of water sound in the cave, touch the cool spring water dripping from the top of the cave, and enjoy the other side of the waterfall from the cave window, experiencing the magical feeling of "people walking in the waterfall, water flowing around".
Guarding a Waterfall Rainbow
Key: Encounter between sunshine and mist! On a clear morning to noon day, standing by the Rhinoceros Pond or on the waterfall viewing platform below the waterfall, it is easy to see huge rainbows, even double rainbows spanning the waterfall, which is the most beautiful filter gifted by nature.
Walk through the Tianxing Bridge and the Stone Forest on the Water
Spend 2-3 hours strolling through the Tianxingqiao scenic area. Wandering between natural stone forests and stalagmites, with murmuring water underfoot and green shade wrapped in vines overhead, searching for one's birthday stone on the "Shushengbu" (365 jumping steps) and experiencing the exquisite and delicate karst landscape.
Visit a filming location for Journey to the West
Go to Doupotang Waterfall, stand in front of the wide mudflat, and recall the classic picture of Tang Monk and his disciples. The water flow here is relatively gentle, and the scenery is open, suitable for quietly savoring the natural beauty captured by film and television works.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
