Chengdu Panda Base

Chengdu Panda Base

The Chengdu Panda Base, a global hub for giant panda conservation, is home to over 200 rare pandas and 80 red pandas. Founded in 1987, this 357-acre sanctuary 10 km northeast of Chengdu combines breeding research with eco-tourism, playing a pivotal role in doubling wild panda populations since 2003. Recognized by UNESCO as a “World Network of Biosphere Reserve,” it offers visitors unparalleled access to these iconic creatures in lush bamboo habitats.

Historical Overview

Established to save pandas from extinction, the base began with 6 sickly pandas rescued from the wild. Through global collaborations (notably with San Diego Zoo and Wolong Reserve), it pioneered artificial insemination and reintroduction programs. Milestones include the 1994 birth of Cheng Shi, the first panda born via cryopreserved sperm, and the 2018 release of Tao Tao, the first captive-bred panda to survive in the wild. Today, it houses 148 pandas—the world’s largest captive population.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return. FAQ

Q & A

Asked by O**orn Theresa from UK | November 11,2025 18:07
Is it convenient to bring a stroller?
Answered by intotravelchina | November 11,2025 18:17
The park’s pathways are flat, but some observation decks have stairs. We recommend bringing a lightweight, foldable stroller. However, a baby carrier is even more advisable—it offers greater flexibility for watching the climbing performances in the Panda Kindergarten area.

What time can I see the pandas being active?
Answered by intotravelchina | November 11,2025 18:09
Head straight to the Moonlight Delivery Room as soon as the park opens at 7:30 AM—the cubs' feeding time is from 8:00 to 9:30 AM. Most pandas take their afternoon naps after 10:00 AM, so we recommend touring in reverse order: visit the cubs first → then the sub-adult area → followed by the adult area. This way, you’ll also avoid the peak crowds between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
