Shanghai Shopping Guide

This article provides some shopping malls in Shanghai, which can help first-time visitors to Shanghai easily find shopping places.

When it comes to modern and trendy consumer environments, if Shanghai claims to be second in China, I'm afraid no other city dares to claim to be first. Whether it's world-class brands or independent designer brands, whether it's novelties or household goods, whether it's shopping environment or service level, Shanghai may be the most worthwhile city to visit without leaving the country.

In Shanghai, the subway is the most convenient and efficient way to access various shopping destinations: from Nanjing Road to Jing'an Temple, and Huaihai Road are the top shopping routes. The Nanjing East Road Station, Nanjing West Road Station, and Jing'an Temple Station on Line 2 connect the past and present of Nanjing Road. Across the Huangpu River, Lujiazui also offers many new, high-end shopping destinations.

During seasonal changes, holidays, or store anniversaries, major malls often offer amazing discounts, making it a great time for shopping. If you want to know more information about Shanghai trip, please feel free to contact us.

Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street | China’s First Commercial Street

Nanjing Road is Shanghai's oldest commercial street, famous for the "Ten-Mile Foreign Settlement" before the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Nanjing Road generally refers to the East Nanjing Road, extending from The Bund in the east to Xizang Middle Road in the west. It features over 100 traditional Chinese old-brand shops and modern shopping malls, along with century-old stores like First Food Store, Lao Jiefu, Bao DaXiang, Hengdeli, and Wu Liangcai. Southern merchandise shops are concentrated around Nanjing Road.

Recommended Malls: Shanghai World Trade Plaza, New World Daimaru Department Store, Raffles City.

Jing’an Temple, Nanjing West Road | High-End Consumption "South-West Concept"

Jing’an Temple and Nanjing West Road form the western extension of Nanjing Road's commercial street. It features both mass-market shopping and luxury boutiques, with iconic shopping centers like Henglong Plaza, Meilong Town Plaza, and Jiuguang Department Store, creating a high-end shopping "South-West Concept." It's also a hotspot for new, trendy malls.

Recommended Malls: Jiuguang Department Store, Xintiandi Taikoo Hui, Reel Mall, Henglong Plaza, Jing'an Kerry Centre.

Huaihai Road, Xintiandi | The Shanghai Style of the Former French Concession

Huaihai Road and Xintiandi are famous shopping streets in Shanghai, home to many prestigious stores. The old buildings of Shikumen in Xintiandi and the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China carry the weight of Shanghai's history. Here, the fusion of the new and old, the collision of Western and Shanghai styles, creates a unique vibe that is irreplaceable. Compared to the "old-money flavor" of the "South-West Style," this area exudes more avant-garde and artistic flair.

Recommended Malls: Shanghai Plaza, K11, Xintiandi, Iapm Mall.

Lujiazui Business District | Pudong's New Aristocracy

In addition to the most representative shopping districts mentioned above, areas such as Xujiahui, Zhongshan Park, and Wujiaochang also offer excellent shopping options. Not to mention, countless hidden gem stores can be found in Shanghai's various unique neighborhoods. For shopping enthusiasts, Shanghai is a "mega mall" that can never be fully explored.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
