Dachaidan Emerald Lake

Dachaidan Emerald Lake

Dachaidan Emerald Lake, located in Dachaidan Town, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, is a stunning sulfuric magnesium-type salt lake renowned for its jade-green waters. Covering 15 square kilometers, it originated as a mining area for boron, lithium, and potash by the Dachaidan Chemical Plant. Now a National AAAA-rated Scenic Area since August 2023, the lake’s vibrant hues—ranging from turquoise to deep blue—stem from mineral-rich brines containing potassium, magnesium, and lithium. Its unique “sky mirror” effect, caused by high salinity and crystalline salt layers, creates breathtaking reflections of snow-capped peaks and cloud-streaked skies.

Historical Overview
The lake’s formation is tied to industrial heritage: decades of mining (1950s–1990s) carved numerous salt pits, later filled by groundwater and brine. Post-2018, it transformed into a tourist destination with infrastructure like viewing platforms and a small train. Historically, it served as a vital resource hub during the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Archaeological traces reveal ancient lake sediments dating back 75 million years, linked to the Qaidam Basin’s geological evolution. The site symbolizes human-nature synergy, blending industrial legacy with ecological restoration.

Structural Layout
The lake comprises six numbered zones:

  • Zone 1: Vegetation test area with autumn reeds.
  • Zone 2: Yellow-toned lake group north of Dachaidan Lake.
  • Zone 3: Five colorful pools with varied mineral concentrations.
  • Zone 4: Ideal for mirror-like water reflections.
  • Zone 5: Largest lake cluster, best viewed aerially.
  • Zone 6: Heart-shaped “mother-child” lakes, a viral photography spot.
A 60-meter-long small train connects six stops, while walking trails wind through salt flats and yadan landforms. The perimeter features salt flowers, crystallized salt beds, and seasonal wildflowers.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
