Day 22: Arrival in Shanghai & Free Time
Climb aboard China’s world-famous bullet train this morning and watch the countryside blur past at over 300 km/h. In just about 4.5 hours, you‘ll glide from the ancient capital of Beijing straight into the gleaming future of Shanghai-. Upon arrival, your private driver will greet you at the station and transfer you to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to settle in or start exploring this dazzling metropolis at your own rhythm. Whether you choose to rest or take a preliminary wander through nearby streets, Shanghai’s magnetic energy awaits just outside your door.
Day 23: Yu Garden, Wukang Road, Nanjing Road & The Bund
Dive headfirst into Shanghai‘s fascinating layers. Your morning begins in the tranquility of Yu Garden, a 466-year-old Ming Dynasty masterpiece tucked within the Old City. This exquisitely preserved classical garden—renowned as “the finest garden in southeast China”—unfolds like a living scroll painting, with rockeries shaped like mythical beasts, koi-filled ponds, and zigzag bridges designed to keep mischievous spirits at bay-. Just outside its walls lies the bustling Yuyuan Bazaar, where the scent of shengjianbao (pan-fried soup dumplings) mingles with the chatter of the crowd. Next, we’ll wander Wukang Road in the former French Concession. This 1,183-meter street is an open-air museum of architecture, home to 14 outstanding historic buildings—including the iconic ship-like Wukang Mansion designed by the legendary László Hudec—and former residences of over 30 Chinese cultural luminaries-. Plane trees canopy the avenue as you pass Mediterranean villas, Spanish-style homes, and Art Deco gems-. Later, feel the pulse of modern China on Nanjing Road, a neon-lit shopping artery buzzing with energy, before ending your day on The Bund. As dusk falls, stand along the Huangpu River promenade and watch the colonial-era “Wall Street of Asia” on one shore glow against the sci-fi skyline of Pudong‘s futuristic skyscrapers on the other—Shanghai’s past and future in a single breathtaking panorama.
Day 24: Zhujiajiao Water Town, Jade Buddha Temple & 1,000 Trees
Venture beyond the skyscrapers to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, often called the “Venice of Shanghai.” This 1,700-year-old water town is a dreamscape of arched stone bridges, willow-draped canals, and whitewashed Ming and Qing dynasty houses-. Glide along the quiet waterways on a traditional wooden boat, pass the historic Qing Dynasty Post Office, and lose yourself in lanes that seem untouched by time. In the afternoon, return to the city for a dose of serenity at the Jade Buddha Temple, a spiritual oasis hidden amid Shanghai‘s urban bustle. Founded in 1882, this revered temple houses two magnificent Burmese jade Buddha statues that radiate a profound sense of peace-. Watch monks chant and local worshippers light incense as you absorb the temple’s timeless atmosphere. We‘ll round out the day with a stop at 1,000 Trees (Tian‘an Qiān Shù), one of Shanghai’s most audacious new architectural landmarks. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, this “vertical forest” rises like a modern-day Hanging Gardens of Babylon along Suzhou Creek, with over 1,000 concrete columns topped with living trees and shrubs-. It‘s a stunning example of Shanghai’s relentless creativity and the perfect visual punctuation to your China odyssey.
