Origin: From "Fanbo" to a Gourmet Paradise

Furong Ancient Town

The name "Fangshang" reflects a thousand-year history of settlement.
The profound heritage of the "Muslim Quarter" originates from a thousand-year-long history of ethnic integration. During the Tang Dynasty, this area was known as "Fanfang," a settlement for merchants from the Western Regions who came to China for trade and daily life. From the late Northern Song Dynasty to the early Southern Song Dynasty, a stable Hui community had formed in the northwest corner of Xi'an. During the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, with the prosperity of the Silk Road and the further development of the Hui people, this area gradually became the center of Hui culture, economy, and life within Xi'an. The affectionate nickname "Fangshang," meaning "the neighborhood where Hui people live," originated from this.

The Road to Rebirth: From Old Street to Cultural and Tourism Landmark
The modern appearance of the Muslim Quarter is a story of urban renewal and cultural preservation going hand in hand.
- The essence of the old street: Until the early 1990s, this was still an old street full of traditional houses and full of life.
- Protection and Renovation: In 1992, the Xi'an Municipal Government launched the renovation of the historical district, paving bluestone roads and reconstructing the buildings along the street in the style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1997, the more landmark "Sino-Norwegian Cooperation Hui Muslim Historical District Protection Project" was launched, which restored typical courtyards such as No. 125 Huajue Lane. The project won the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Conservation Award in 2002.
- Culinary Icon: While preserving the original character of the area, the rich halal food culture of the neighborhood has been naturally unearthed and amplified. With the joint efforts of many time-honored brands and new restaurants, it has eventually transformed into a nationally renowned culinary cultural landmark, attracting countless Chinese and foreign tourists every year.

The Flavors of Everyday Life: An Epic Taste of Chang'an
The soul of the Muslim Quarter lies in its ubiquitous and vibrant food culture. The snacks here are not just a flavor, but also a tradition.

The perseverance of a century-old brand:
- Beef and mutton stew with bread: This "Number One Bowl Under Heaven" is an essential part of experiencing Xi'an's culinary philosophy. Its essence lies in "breaking the bread," where specially made flatbread is finely broken into pieces the size of soybeans, and then "cooked" by the chef in a secret broth. Established brands like Lao Sun Jia and Tong Sheng Xiang, with over a century of history, have preserved the rich, authentic flavor of their soup and meat.
- Roujiamo (Chinese hamburger): Crispy "Baiji" buns and tender, flavorful braised pork are a match made in heaven. Shops like Lao Sun Jia and Fan Ji have perfected this simple snack, with the aroma of meat permeating every fiber, and the bun crispy yet not crumbly.
- Soup dumplings: Jia San's soup dumplings are the most famous. The skin is as thin as paper and looks like a lantern when lifted. When eating them, you should "lift them gently, move them slowly, open a window first, and then drink the soup", which is very interesting and has a great taste.

Surprises hidden in the alleys:
Besides the well-known "main" restaurants, you can only discover local delicacies hidden away by wandering through side alleys such as Dapiyuan and Sajinqiao.
- Zenggao: Made by steaming glutinous rice, red dates, and kidney beans in an ancient "zeng" (a type of steamer), it is soft, sticky, and sweet, and is the first comfort food for many people in Xi'an in the morning.
- Specialty Snacks: The thousand-layer rose baked buns from Northwest Yilan Handmade Baked Bun Shop are made with high-quality ingredients; "Gujinxiang" sesame flatbreads come in a variety of flavors, including sesame paste, salt and pepper, and brown sugar, and are crispy and delicious; Dingjia crispy pork is made by steaming beef tenderloin coated in flour, resulting in tender meat and a rich broth, making it an excellent dish to accompany rice.

Foodie Tip:
Don't just focus on the main street of Beiyuanmen. Explore the side alleys such as Dapiyuan and Sajinqiao. You can often find hidden gems with more authentic flavors and more reasonable prices.
Behind the lenses of many food bloggers are the familiar, everyday flavors of locals, enjoyed day after day for decades. You can't go wrong by following the queues at the stalls run by your neighbors.

Humanistic craftsmanship – a dialogue of civilizations among bricks and stones
The charm of the Muslim Quarter goes far beyond just satisfying the appetite. The architecture and spaces here silently tell a story of cultural exchange.

- Huajue Lane Great Mosque: This is the most breathtaking cultural wonder in the Muslim Quarter and even Xi'an. Unlike the common domed mosques, it adopts a completely Chinese classical architectural style, with pavilions, towers, carved beams and painted rafters, but all layout and functions strictly adhere to Islamic doctrine. Here, you can see Arabic inscriptions and Chinese plaques coexisting harmoniously, a vivid example of dialogue between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
- Gao Family Courtyard: A well-preserved ancient Ming and Qing dynasty residence located inside the North Gate. Here, you can not only admire the exquisite Guanzhong residential architecture, but also watch Shaanxi's unique Huaxian shadow puppetry and Qinqiang opera performances, instantly transporting you back to old Xi'an a hundred years ago.
- Streetscape and Architecture: Strolling along the cobblestone streets, you'll find yourself surrounded by Ming and Qing dynasty-style brick and tile houses with rustic signs. Looking up, you'll see traditional Chinese brick carvings; from the side, the alleyways appear deep and secluded, brimming with life. As night falls, the entire street is illuminated by electric lights, gas lamps, and shop lights. The aroma of barbecue mingles with the lively sounds of people, creating a vibrant and bustling cityscape.

Four Must-Do Things to Unlock the Complete Journey to Fangshang
1. Be a "steamed bun shopper" for once.
- Experience: Find a time-honored paomo (pita bread soaked in mutton soup) restaurant, calm down, and spend twenty or thirty minutes carefully breaking the pita bread into pieces. This is not only the prelude to the meal, but also a ritual to integrate into the local rhythm of life.
- Location: Well-known old shops such as Lao Mi Jia and Lao Liu Jia.
2. Attend a nighttime banquet illuminated by dazzling lights.
- Key point: The night view and night market are the essence of the Muslim Quarter! It is recommended to come after 4 or 5 pm and stay until night.
- Experience: Watch the flames rise from the barbecue stalls and the steam rise from the hot pot tripe stalls; eat while walking through the bustling crowds; sit in the Drum Tower Square and watch kites fly over the rooftops of tall buildings.
3. Seek a moment of tranquility that transcends time and space.
- Experience: Turning off the bustling main street into Huajue Lane, just a few steps away lies the serene and solemn Great Mosque. Amidst the ancient cypress trees, stone tablets, and prayer hall, one can feel the solemnity of religion and the weight of history, a world apart from the hustle and bustle outside.
4. Learn a little intangible cultural heritage with your fingertips
- Cultural interaction: Watch a shadow puppet show at the Gao Family Courtyard; try making a crispy pastry at a street shop; or simply listen to street performers playing instruments and singing, and feel the vitality of folk art flowing through the streets and alleys.

Complete Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to get there: Seamless connection to the city center
The Muslim Quarter is located in the absolute center of Xi'an and is extremely convenient to access.
- From the airport/high-speed rail station: Take the subway to Zhonglou Station on Line 2 or Line 6, exit from the Gulou exit, and walk for 3-5 minutes to reach the entrance of the street.
- From anywhere in the city: The subway and bus networks are extensive, with most lines providing direct or convenient transfers to the Bell Tower. Travel tip: Set "Beiyuanmen" or "Gulou" as your destination when using navigation.
- Surrounding attractions: It is within a 15-minute walk of the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Xi'an City Wall (South Gate), making it ideal for connecting these attractions.

Best time to visit
The Muslim Quarter is open year-round, but the best time to experience it is from evening to night during the spring and autumn seasons.
- Spring and autumn (March-May, September-November): The climate is comfortable, the nights are cool and pleasant, and it is most enjoyable to stroll through the streets.
- Summer Night Market Season (June-August): The nights are bustling and it's a great time to experience the vibrant atmosphere of the city, but be aware of the heat and crowds.
- Winter Experience Season (December-February): Fewer tourists, allowing for a more leisurely visit. On a cold winter night, a steaming bowl of paomo (pita bread soaked in mutton soup) or xiaosurou (crispy fried pork) brings double the warmth and satisfaction.

Accommodation options
- Surrounding areas of the core area (preferred):
Hotels in the Bell Tower/Drum Tower commercial area: Within walking distance of the Muslim Quarter, saving significant travel time and facilitating multiple visits for exploration. A wide range of options are available, from budget to luxury, catering to most tourists.
- Along the subway line (cost-effective option):
Hotels/guesthouses along Metro Lines 1, 2, and 4: Xi'an's metro network is efficient. Staying in hotels near metro stations, even if they are not in the core area, offers better value for money. You can get better accommodation with a smaller budget, and commuting to the Muslim Quarter is also very convenient.

IntoTravelChina Accommodation Booking Recommendations:
We recommend choosing accommodation based on your itinerary's focus. If you plan to explore the ancient city area in depth, the area near the Bell Tower is the best choice; if your itinerary covers multiple attractions throughout the city, choosing a hotel near a major subway line interchange offers more flexibility. Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
