The Flavors of Everyday Life: An Epic Taste of Chang'an
The soul of the Muslim Quarter lies in its ubiquitous and vibrant food culture. The snacks here are not just a flavor, but also a tradition.
The perseverance of a century-old brand:
- Beef and mutton stew with bread: This "Number One Bowl Under Heaven" is an essential part of experiencing Xi'an's culinary philosophy. Its essence lies in "breaking the bread," where specially made flatbread is finely broken into pieces the size of soybeans, and then "cooked" by the chef in a secret broth. Established brands like Lao Sun Jia and Tong Sheng Xiang, with over a century of history, have preserved the rich, authentic flavor of their soup and meat.
- Roujiamo (Chinese hamburger): Crispy "Baiji" buns and tender, flavorful braised pork are a match made in heaven. Shops like Lao Sun Jia and Fan Ji have perfected this simple snack, with the aroma of meat permeating every fiber, and the bun crispy yet not crumbly.
- Soup dumplings: Jia San's soup dumplings are the most famous. The skin is as thin as paper and looks like a lantern when lifted. When eating them, you should "lift them gently, move them slowly, open a window first, and then drink the soup", which is very interesting and has a great taste.
Surprises hidden in the alleys:
Besides the well-known "main" restaurants, you can only discover local delicacies hidden away by wandering through side alleys such as Dapiyuan and Sajinqiao.
- Zenggao: Made by steaming glutinous rice, red dates, and kidney beans in an ancient "zeng" (a type of steamer), it is soft, sticky, and sweet, and is the first comfort food for many people in Xi'an in the morning.
- Specialty Snacks: The thousand-layer rose baked buns from Northwest Yilan Handmade Baked Bun Shop are made with high-quality ingredients; "Gujinxiang" sesame flatbreads come in a variety of flavors, including sesame paste, salt and pepper, and brown sugar, and are crispy and delicious; Dingjia crispy pork is made by steaming beef tenderloin coated in flour, resulting in tender meat and a rich broth, making it an excellent dish to accompany rice.
Foodie Tip:
Don't just focus on the main street of Beiyuanmen. Explore the side alleys such as Dapiyuan and Sajinqiao. You can often find hidden gems with more authentic flavors and more reasonable prices.
Behind the lenses of many food bloggers are the familiar, everyday flavors of locals, enjoyed day after day for decades. You can't go wrong by following the queues at the stalls run by your neighbors.
Humanistic craftsmanship – a dialogue of civilizations among bricks and stones
The charm of the Muslim Quarter goes far beyond just satisfying the appetite. The architecture and spaces here silently tell a story of cultural exchange.
- Huajue Lane Great Mosque: This is the most breathtaking cultural wonder in the Muslim Quarter and even Xi'an. Unlike the common domed mosques, it adopts a completely Chinese classical architectural style, with pavilions, towers, carved beams and painted rafters, but all layout and functions strictly adhere to Islamic doctrine. Here, you can see Arabic inscriptions and Chinese plaques coexisting harmoniously, a vivid example of dialogue between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
- Gao Family Courtyard: A well-preserved ancient Ming and Qing dynasty residence located inside the North Gate. Here, you can not only admire the exquisite Guanzhong residential architecture, but also watch Shaanxi's unique Huaxian shadow puppetry and Qinqiang opera performances, instantly transporting you back to old Xi'an a hundred years ago.
- Streetscape and Architecture: Strolling along the cobblestone streets, you'll find yourself surrounded by Ming and Qing dynasty-style brick and tile houses with rustic signs. Looking up, you'll see traditional Chinese brick carvings; from the side, the alleyways appear deep and secluded, brimming with life. As night falls, the entire street is illuminated by electric lights, gas lamps, and shop lights. The aroma of barbecue mingles with the lively sounds of people, creating a vibrant and bustling cityscape.
