Tongli Water Town: A Living Canvas of Jiangnan Elegance
Nestled in Suzhou’s Jiangnan water network, Tongli is a 1,000-year-old town famed for its “Three Rivers, Three Streets” layout, ancient bridges, and Ming-Qing residential architecture. Designated a National AAAA-rated Scenic Area, it offers a poetic escape into traditional Chinese water town life.

Historical Overview
Founded during the Song Dynasty (960–1279), Tongli flourished as a trade hub in the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) dynasties. Its canals, once vital for silk and rice transport, now cradle 58 historic bridges and 15 well-preserved gardens, including the UNESCO-recognized Retreat & Recollection Garden (Tuisi Yuan).

Structural Layout
The town’s “water-lane” design merges natural waterways with human-made canals, forming a labyrinth of 15 rivers, 49 bridges, and interconnected lanes. Key zones include:

  • Old Quarter: Clusters of courtyard homes, ancestral halls, and workshops along East-West Main Street.
  • Canal Loop: A 3-kilometer boat route linking landmarks like the Three Bridges (Taiping, Jili, Changqing).
  • Garden District: Private gardens blending rockeries, ponds, and pavilions, epitomized by Tuisi Yuan’s “small landscape, grand vision” philosophy.

Major Attractions

  1. Retreat & Recollection Garden: A Qing-era scholar’s garden with layered courtyards, moon gates, and a theater pavilion.
  2. Three Bridges: Symbolic arched bridges crossed for luck during weddings.
  3. Gengcun Ancestral Hall: A Ming-era clan hall with intricate wood carvings.
  4. Nongao Hall: A merchant’s mansion showcasing Suzhou-style embroidery.
  5. Pearl Tower: A Ming watchtower offering panoramic canal views.
  6. Ming Dynasty Street: A preserved commercial lane with antique shops and teahouses.

  • Classic Route (2–3h): Boat along the Loop → Taiping Bridge → Tuisi Garden → Ming Street.
  • Extended Route (4–5h): Add Gengcun Hall, Nongao Mansion, and Pearl Tower.
  • Comprehensive Route (Full Day): Combine gardens, ancestral halls, and a boat tour with lunch at a waterside tavern.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
