Origins:The Decline and Rebirth of a Five-Century-Old Village

The Enduring Charm of Huizhou:Five Centuries of Mountain-Dwelling Wisdom
Huangling was established during the mid-Ming Dynasty(circa 1506–1521 AD)and possesses a history spanning nearly 500 years.Originally named"Huangli,"the village earned its name from the dense groves of slender bamboo(huang)planted throughout the area. The careful selection of the village site and its subsequent layout vividly demonstrate the survival wisdom of the early Huizhou inhabitants—a wisdom rooted in a deep reverence for nature and a profound ability to adapt to the surrounding terrain. In Huangling Village, where the terrain is so rugged that"there is scarcely three feet of level ground,"usable flat land is extremely scarce.Consequently, the village's ancestors built their homes along the natural contours of the steep mountain slopes—which drop nearly 100 meters in elevation—constructing hundreds of dwellings in a fan-shaped,terraced layout that rises layer upon layer in picturesque, staggered harmony.Even more ingenious was their solution to the challenge of finding space to dry agricultural crops:every household extended drying racks from their rooftops, utilizing round bamboo trays to air out their harvests. This practice served as the prototype for the world-renowned"Shaiqiu"(Autumn Sun-drying)custom seen today. It was this ingenuity that enabled the people of Huangling to live and thrive amidst these steep cliffs for centuries.

The Path to Rebirth:From"Hollowed-Out Village"to World-Renowned Destination
The modern story of Huangling stands as a classic exemplar of rural revitalization and cultural tourism activation:

The Sorrow of Decline(2000s):As the pace of urbanization accelerated,Huangling—like many ancient villages tucked deep within the mountains—faced severe"hollowing-out."Villagers migrated away en masse, old houses fell into disrepair, and terraced fields lay increasingly fallow;for a time, this 500-year-old village sank into a profound silence—a state of"people gone, houses empty, and fields abandoned."

Breaking the Stalemate and Revitalization(From 2009):Wuyuan Huangling Cultural Tourism Co.,Ltd.implemented an innovative model—centered on"collective relocation, precise return migration, and industrial upgrading"—to undertake the unified planning and protective development of the ancient village.Villagers were collectively relocated to new homes at the foot of the mountain, while the historic buildings were meticulously restored and the village's water systems were revived.

Artisan-Led Transformation(2010s–2020s):Guided by the principle of"restoring the old to look like the old,"the project reconstructed and renovated over a hundred historic buildings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. This effort restored the authentic ambiance of the village's"Sky Street"and ancient lanes, while transforming"Shaiqiu"—originally a simple agricultural custom—into a highly recognizable and distinctive cultural brand.

A Stunning Debut(2023–Present):In October 2023,Huangling Village was included in the list of"Best Tourism Villages"announced by the United Nations World Tourism Organization(UNWTO).On December 27,2024,the village was officially designated a National AAAAA-level Tourist Attraction by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, becoming the 15th 5A-level scenic area in Jiangxi Province and the fourth in Shangrao City.In 2024,Huangling’s annual visitor count surpassed 3.12 million, and the average annual income per villager reached 56,000 RMB.

Must-See Wonders:A Symphony of Nature’s Creation and Human Ingenuity

Nature’s Handiwork—Terraced Fields,Seas of Clouds,and Seasonal Blooms
Huangling’s natural landscapes transform their hues with the changing seasons, creating a flowing scroll painting penned by the very earth itself.

Terraced Flower Seas:The Earth’s Fingerprints and Palette

Canola Flower Seas(The Gold of Spring):Huangling’s ink-wash-style terraced fields have been acclaimed by netizens as one of the"Top 10 Most Beautiful Terraced Fields in the World."Every year from March to early April, tens of thousands of mu(acres)of cascading terraces burst into bloom with golden canola flowers.Viewed from the high-altitude cable cars, the terraces resemble the fingerprints of the earth;juxtaposed against the ancient Huizhou-style village—characterized by its white walls and dark-tiled roofs—they form a breathtaking,three-dimensional masterpiece. To extend the blooming season, the scenic area has cultivated a second phase of flower fields at the higher-altitude Gaoling Terraces. These blooms last until mid-April,allowing visitors to enjoy a unique late-spring spectacle:"While the blossoms of the human world fade in April, the canola flowers in the mountains are just beginning to flourish."

The Flower Town(The Brilliance of Summer):From April to August,Huangling transforms into a"Flower Town."Various herbaceous flowers—including pansies, roses, hydrangeas, verbena, and wisteria—bloom in succession, adorning every corner of the ancient streets, alleys, walls, and windowsills with vibrant splashes of color. The"Flower Stream Water Street"takes this a step further by seamlessly blending water features with floral displays;shrouded in a gentle mist, the setting exudes an ethereal,fairy-tale aura, becoming the most refreshing and soul-soothing landscape of the summer season.

Red Maples and Imperial Chrysanthemums(The Intensity of Autumn):From November to mid-to-late December,Huangling welcomes the peak season for viewing its red maple foliage. Thanks to a unique microclimate—characterized by high elevation and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night—Huangling’s autumn colors persist until mid-to-late December, lasting significantly longer than in most other regions of China.Red-leaved tree species—such as the Chinese tallow tree and sweetgum—paint the layered forests in vibrant hues. These vivid colors interplay with the red chili peppers and golden"Emperor Chrysanthemums"drying on the racks, transforming the ancient village into a richly textured oil painting.

Photography Tips:The best time to capture the terraced fields shrouded in morning mist is between 6:00 and 7:00 AM.During this window, crowds are sparse, and the swirling clouds and fog cause the ancient village to appear and disappear like a mirage. The glass section of the Leixin Bridge offers an exceptional vantage point for a panoramic view of the terraced fields;a wide-angle lens is ideal for capturing the stunning, intricate textures of the landscape.

Cultural Ingenuity—A Huizhou Dream Suspended on the Cliffs
The architecture here serves not merely as shelter, but as a living vessel for the enduring culture of Huizhou.

Tianjie Ancient Lane:A"Moving Scroll of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival":Tianjie(Heavenly Street)is the central thoroughfare winding through the Huangling scenic area.Spanning approximately 700 meters,it is paved with blue flagstones and dressed stone slabs, flanked on both sides by Huizhou-style architecture dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. With their pristine white walls,charcoal-grey tiles,distinctive"horse-head"gables,and gracefully upturned eaves, the buildings exude an air of profound antiquity. The street is lined with shops—operating as"front-shop,back-workshop"establishments—selling local specialties and intangible cultural heritage handicrafts.Strolling through this lane feels like stepping back in time to an era when merchants congregated and the marketplace bustled with life.As dusk falls, red lanterns begin to glow, revealing a softer, more gentle side of Tianjie.

"Shaiqiu"Households:China's Most Beautiful Cultural Symbol:This is the very soul of Huangling.Beneath the eaves and upon the drying racks of hundreds of Huizhou-style residences, round bamboo trays overflow with agricultural bounty—vibrant red chili peppers, golden corn, orange pumpkins, white kidney beans, and more—creating a dazzling,multi-hued spectacle of layered colors. This tradition of"Shaiqiu"(Sun-drying Harvests)is not exclusive to autumn;it is a year-round visual feast.Spring brings the drying of tea leaves and bracken;summer, string beans and eggplants;autumn, chili peppers and Emperor Chrysanthemums;and winter, cured meats and sausages. The best vantage points for photography are located on the third floor of the Shai Gongfang(Drying Workshop),the observation deck at Wuguitang, and the third floor of the Photography Bar,all of which allow you to frame both the ancient village and the sun-drying harvest within a single shot.Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshops:The Living Legacy of Craftsmanship:Hidden along Tianjie Street are various workshops dedicated to intangible cultural heritage—featuring crafts such as Jialu paper umbrellas, the"Three Carvings of Huizhou"(brick, stone, and wood carving),and bamboo weaving.Visitors can witness firsthand how artisans transform a simple stalk of bamboo into an exquisite oil-paper umbrella,or watch as they bring a piece of wood to life, one hammer tap and chisel stroke at a time.Joanan,an international student from Madagascar, once remarked with admiration:"I never imagined the culture here could be so captivating."

Leixin Bridge&Huaxi Water Street:Leixin Bridge spans 298.15 meters in length and towers 97 meters vertically above the ground;its central 48-meter section features a glass walkway. It served as a filming location for the popular TV series Ode to Joy 2.Standing on the bridge, visitors are treated to panoramic views of terraced flower fields and the majestic canyon landscape below.Huaxi Water Street, meanwhile, has emerged as a trendy new"photo-op hotspot."A stream winds its way down through the village—shrouded in mist, framed by lush greenery, and dotted with quaint bridges—creating an atmosphere so ethereal it feels like a true fairyland.

Photography Secrets:
Third Floor of the Shai Gongfang(Drying Workshop):Offers a panoramic bird's-eye view of the entire village's Shaiqiu(Autumn Sun-drying)spectacle—a classic vantage point best utilized when the lighting is soft.
The Wuguitang Window View:Push open the antique wooden windows, and you are immediately greeted by a picturesque scene of the Shaiqiu displays set against a backdrop of distant mountains—a composition rich in poetic charm.
The Glass Section of Leixin Bridge:Ideal for capturing high-angle shots of the terraced flower fields;drone photography is also an option(though prior registration/permission is required).
Huaxi Water Street:A harmonious blend of ancient bridges, swirling mist, vibrant flowers, and shimmering reflections—perfect for portrait photography.
