Nature's Masterpiece—The Breath and Pulse of a Volcano
The natural landscape of Xiqiao Mountain represents an eternal dialogue between volcanic forces, water and stone, and the surrounding forests.
Majestic Peaks:An Array of Seventy-Two Varied Summits
Although Xiqiao Mountain stands at a modest elevation of only 344 meters,it features a striking array of 72 distinct peaks, with Dake Peak rising as the highest among them. The cluster of peaks resembles the petals of a lotus flower;while the terrain is not precipitous,it possesses a unique elegance and spiritual aura characteristic of the Lingnan region.Ascending to the Nanhai Guanyin Platform atop Daxian Peak, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Xiqiao Town below—the Tianhu Lake mirrors the sky like a looking glass, while a crisscrossing network of mulberry-dyke fishponds unfolds beneath, presenting a quintessential tableau of the Lingnan water-town landscape. The Spirit of Water:Lakes Within Mountains,Mountains Within Lakes
The defining characteristic of Xiqiao Mountain is the interplay between land and water:"Lakes lie within the mountains, and mountains rise from the lakes;water flows amidst the peaks, and peaks are mirrored in the water."The entire mountain boasts 232 natural springs and 28 waterfalls;among them, the three"Heavenly Lakes"(Tianhu)at the summit are the most renowned:
Tianhu Park:A crater-dammed lake that serves as the"living room"of Xiqiao Mountain.Amidst the scenic beauty of the lake and surrounding peaks,a grand water spectacle—the"Tianhu Flying Waterfall"—is performed daily at scheduled times.Music, dancing fountains, and cascading waterfalls intertwine to create a truly magnificent and awe-inspiring display.
Feiliu Qianchi(Thousand-Foot Cascade)&Yunyan Feipu(Cloud-Rock Falls):These are the two most spectacular waterfalls on Xiqiao Mountain. After a rainfall,as the skies begin to clear, the water volume surges;the roar of the water thunders like thunder, and the cascades hang suspended like white silk ribbons—a perfect embodiment of the phrase,"Water dances within the mountains."
Biyu Cave:A deep, secluded gorge where a babbling stream flows and waterfalls cascade amidst lush greenery—an ideal retreat for escaping the summer heat.
Caves of Rugged Beauty:A Living Textbook of Geology
Xiqiao Mountain is home to 42 caves, each possessing its own unique, secluded charm.Among them, the following stand out as the most distinctive:
Shiyan Rock(Stone Swallow Rock):To date, this is the largest, most intact, and most magnificent underwater archaeological site of ancient industrial production in China, designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. After the ancient quarry was submerged,it transformed into an underwater wonderland spanning hundreds of thousands of square meters.Visitors can take a boat deep into the site to witness the emerald waters reflecting the rock walls, experiencing firsthand the awe-inspiring atmosphere of this"underwater factory."
Jiulong Rock(Nine Dragon Rock):Comprising nine bubble-like caves left behind by a volcanic eruption, these caverns are connected like a string of pearls.Cool and deep within, they serve as a natural classroom for understanding the geological evolution of Xiqiao Mountain.
Shisandong(Thirteen Caves):A"cave-exploring"route that has become a favorite among hiking enthusiasts in recent years. The interior of the caves is deep and mysterious;at specific times of the day, sunlight streams in,creating a stunning Tyndall effect(known as"Jesus Rays").The best times for photography are between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM(for the"Three Caves"section)and between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM(for the"Thirteen Caves"section).
The Forest Sanctuary:A"Breathing"Natural Oxygen Bar
Xiqiao Mountain boasts a high forest coverage rate and is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. As you hike through the park, you will encounter the square-shaped bamboo stalks of the"Four-Sided Bamboo Garden"—a rare and unique species found exclusively on Xiqiao Mountain. In the Camellia Garden, hundreds of camellia varieties burst into bloom between November and March each year, their red, white, pink, and purple petals vying with one another in a dazzling display of beauty. As spring transitions into summer, wild mountain flowers bloom in profusion;in the late autumn and winter, the forests are painted in a tapestry of vibrant hues—offering spectacular scenery in every season.
The natural beauty of Xiqiao Mountain lies in the gentle interplay between the ancient legacy of its volcanic origins and the tender charm of the Lingnan water towns. With every step, you engage in a dialogue with 47.5 million years of geological time.
Humanistic Craftsmanship—A Civilization Suspended in Faith
The architecture and spiritual traditions found here serve not only as historical witnesses but also as the very soul of Lingnan culture.
Nanhai Guanyin Cultural Park(The Lotus Terrace Amidst the Sea ofClouds):The defining landmark and spiritual heart of Xiqiao Mountain.A colossal bronze seated statue of Guanyin, standing 61.9 meters tall, sits majestically atop Daixian Peak—making it the tallest seated Guanyin statue in the world. Her countenance is solemn and dignified, her eyes cast gently downward;draped in celestial robes and adorned with exquisite jewelry, she sits upon a lotus pedestal 36 meters in diameter, gazing benevolently over the lands of Nanhai. The statue's height of 61.9 meters symbolizes the 19th day of the sixth lunar month—the traditional date of Guanyin's enlightenment. To reach the statue, visitors must ascend a flight of 283 stone steps, along which stand thirty-three pavilions housing various manifestations of Guanyin, each telling a story of her boundless compassion. The interior of the statue's base houses a five-story exhibition hall displaying Buddhist art;the lotus pedestal itself is surrounded by water and accessible via four bridges, symbolizing the"Pure Land in the Four Directions."Photography Tip:In the afternoon, the soft lighting creates a beautiful rim-lighting effect that highlights the statue's solemn and majestic silhouette;at dusk, the statue is bathed in the glow of the setting sun, appearing truly magnificent in its golden splendor.
Baofeng Temple:A renowned Buddhist sanctuary in the Lingnan region, situated adjacent to the Nanhai Guanyin Cultural Park.Originally established during the Ming Dynasty, the temple was subsequently reconstructed and now stands as a magnificent architectural complex. The temple is a vibrant center of worship, with incense burning brightly and a ceaseless stream of devotees arriving to offer their prayers. On each of Guanyin's three holy birthdays(the 19th day of the 2nd,6th,and 9th lunar months),the temple hosts grand vegetarian almsgiving ceremonies, during which devotees may participate in chanting sutras for blessings and partake in a traditional vegetarian feast.
Yunquan Immortal Hall:The quintessential representative of Taoist culture on Xiqiao Mountain. Its predecessor was a traditional academy, which was converted during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty into the Yunquan Immortal Hall to enshrine Patriarch Lü.Together with Mount Luofu,it is celebrated as one of the two premier Taoist holy sites in the Lingnan region.Every year on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month—marking the"Great Immortal's Birthday"—grand processions and temple fairs are held at the foot of Xiqiao Mountain,a thousand-year-old folk tradition that continues to this day.
Sanhu Academy:A symbol of Confucian scholarship on Xiqiao Mountain.Built here by Cen Huaijin—a native of Nanhai—during the Qing Dynasty, the academy served as a study hub where countless students prepared for and achieved success in the Imperial Civil Service Examinations.Lin Zexu once visited the site, and Kang Youwei also studied here.Although only the ruins remain today, the glory of this"Renowned Mountain of Neo-Confucianism in Southern Yue"still echoes within its grounds.
Huang Feihong Lion Dance and Martial Arts Hall:Located at the foot of the mountain, this venue celebrates the martial arts spirit of the region—the birthplace of the"Southern Lion"dance—and honors the legacy of the legendary Huang Feihong.Featuring spectacular daily lion dance performances,it is a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in Lingnan's rich martial arts culture.
Songtang Village:A designated"Historic and Cultural Village of China"situated at the foot of Xiqiao Mountain.Established nearly 800 years ago,the village produced nearly 20 Jinshi(Doctoral Scholars)and Juren(Provincial Scholars)during the Ming and Qing Dynasties—four of whom went on to serve in the prestigious Hanlin Academy—earning it the moniker"The Hanlin Village."Architectural gems reflecting this scholarly heritage—such as the Temple of Confucius,Yangzheng Study Hall, and Huichuan Family School—remain remarkably well-preserved.As you stroll through the village's narrow bluestone lanes, you can almost hear the rhythmic chanting of students reciting their lessons.
Photography Tips:
The best vantage point for panoramic shots is the Nanhai Guanyin Platform, offering sweeping views of Tianhu Lake and the entire town of Xiqiao.
Tianhu Park is ideal for capturing the mesmerizing reflections that create the illusion of"a lake within a mountain, and a mountain within a lake."
The boat dock at Shiyanyan(Stone Swallow Cave)offers the perfect opportunity to capture mystical images of the emerald-green water mirroring the towering rock cliffs.
Drone flight is permitted;however, please ensure you avoid temple precincts to capture magnificent aerial footage of the volcanic peaks and mountain ranges.
