Everything You Need to Know About Tibet’s Weather

spring (March to May): Tibet gradually warms up in spring, but it is still relatively cold. The average temperature in March ranges between -2°C and 12°C, with an average low of -1°C and an average high of 13°C in Lhasa city. Temperatures gradually rise as spring progresses, but nights and early mornings remain colder. Precipitation is low in spring, but there are occasional showers or snow. Spring is one of the best times to visit Tibet, when there are fewer tourists and you can enjoy a more peaceful travel experience. Meanwhile, the Peach Blossom Festival in the Linzhi area is also a highlight of spring, attracting many tourists.


Summer (June to August): Summer is the rainy season in Tibet, with relatively high temperatures, but average daytime temperatures still range between 10°C and 22°C (Lhasa) and 8°C and 17°C (Linzhi). Nighttime temperatures are cooler and care should be taken to keep warm. There is more precipitation in summer, mainly in the evening and at night, but the days are mostly sunny. With green grass and flowers in summer, Tibet is a good time to enjoy the natural scenery. However, it should be noted that due to the rainy season, natural disasters such as landslides or mudslides may occur on some of the roads, so tourists should pay attention to the weather changes and road condition information.


autumn (September to November): Temperatures in Tibet gradually drop in the fall, but are still relatively pleasant. average temperatures in September and October range from 10°C to 22°C and 4°C to 18°C, respectively. Winter (December to February): In winter, the temperature in Tibet is low, but sunny and dry with few clouds. The average temperature in Lhasa in winter ranges from -2℃ to 14℃, and the temperature may drop below freezing at night. Higher altitude areas such as Ali are even colder. Precipitation is low in winter, but there is occasional snowfall. Although Tibet in winter is cold, the unique snow and sunshine bring tourists a different travel experience. Sunbathing on the streets of Lhasa, enjoying the snow in Linzhi, and stargazing at the Everest Base Camp are all highlights of winter travel in Tibet. However, it should be noted that due to the lower temperatures in winter and the possibility of severe plateau reaction at high altitude, tourists need to take adequate measures to protect themselves from cold and high altitude sickness.

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal!
