1. What is China’s Visa-Free Transit Policy?

China’s Visa-Free Transit policy allows travelers to stay in China for a short period—240 hours—without requiring a visa. This is available to passengers in transit who are flying to a third country and have connecting flights within a set number of hours. The aim is to facilitate international travel, offering travelers the chance to explore China during layovers while simplifying their travel experience.

2. Countries Eligible for China’s Visa-Free Transit

The Visa-Free Transit policy is available to citizens of many countries, but eligibility depends on your nationality and the city through which you are entering China:

European countries (25): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway;

Other European countries (15): Russia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Monaco, Belarus;

American countries (6): United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile;

Oceania countries (2): Australia, New Zealand;

Asian countries (6): South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar.

240 Hour Visa-Free Transit

China has expanded its Visa-Free Transit policy to 240 hours (10 days) in certain cities. This extended stay is available in major metropolitan areas, such as:

19 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities): Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan and Shaanxi

Five new provinces: Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hainan and Guizhou

3. Eligibility Criteria for Visa-Free Transit

To be eligible for the Visa-Free Transit program, travelers must meet several conditions. These include:

A. Proof of International Travel

You must be in transit from one international destination to another.

A valid flight ticket from your origin city to your final destination must be shown, and your flight must depart within 240 hours from your arrival in China.

B. Enter and Exit from Designated Cities

You must enter and exit through a designated city in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, or Guangzhou.

If you’re using the 240-hour visa-free policy, you must stay within that city or the specific region defined by local authorities.

C. Stay Duration

For 240-hour visa-free transit, you can stay in the city for up to 10 days.

D. No Change of Destination

Your final destination must be a third country (not the country you are coming from), and you must be flying to a different country from where you arrived in China.

4. How to Apply for Visa-Free Transit in China

One of the most convenient features of the Visa-Free Transit program is that there’s no need for prior approval or an application. The process is completed upon arrival at the airport. Here’s how it works:

Step-by-Step Process:

Arrive at the airport in a designated city (e.g., Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou).

Go to the Visa-Free Transit counter: This is typically located within the immigration area.

Present your documents:

A valid passport (with at least 6 months of validity).

Flight tickets to and from the third country.

Visa-free transit application form (if required).

Immigration Processing: After verification, the immigration officer will stamp your passport with a visa-free transit permit.

Travel freely within the city during your allowed stay.

5. What to Do During Your Visa-Free Stay

Once you’ve received your visa-free transit permit, you are free to explore the city. However, keep in mind that you can only stay within the city of entry and must leave before the visa-free period expires. Here are some things to do during your stay:

Explore top tourist attractions: Visit The Great Wall of China in Beijing, take a cruise on the Yangtze River in Shanghai, or discover The Terracotta Army in Xi’an.

Enjoy cultural experiences: Attend a traditional Chinese Opera or explore ancient temples and palaces.

Business opportunities: If you're on a business trip, schedule meetings or attend conferences within the city.

Note: You cannot leave the designated city or region while using the visa-free policy, so plan your sightseeing and activities accordingly.

6. Things to Keep in Mind

While the visa-free transit option is convenient, there are a few important things to remember:

A. Check Eligibility Before Traveling

Make sure you confirm that your nationality is eligible for the Visa-Free Transit program, and verify the cities where you can benefit from this policy.

B. Ensure Your Transit Period is Within the Allowed Time

240 hours: Stay within the city for a maximum of 10 days.

C. Ensure Proper Documentation

Double-check your flight tickets to ensure they match the eligibility criteria.

Carry your passport and other necessary documents for immigration processing.

D. Don’t Overstay

Make sure you leave China before your allowed transit time expires to avoid fines or complications with immigration.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
