West Lake

West Lake

The West Lake Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, is renowned as one of China’s most iconic landscapes, blending natural beauty with centuries of cultural heritage. Encircling a serene freshwater lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, this 59-square-kilometer area has inspired poets, painters, and emperors for millennia. Its harmonious fusion of pagodas, causeways, gardens, and temples against misty mountains and tranquil waters embodies the Chinese aesthetic of "mountain-water harmony."

Historical Overview

The lake’s history dates back to the 8th century when it was first developed under the Tang Dynasty. Emperors such as Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty and poets like Su Shi (Su Dongpo) left indelible marks through dredging projects, bridge-building, and poetry. The Ten Scenes of West Lake, officially recognized in the Southern Song Dynasty (12th–13th centuries), became a cultural touchstone, immortalized in art and literature. Today, the area’s 1,000+ years of history are palpable in its ancient pavilions, stone carvings, and timeless traditions.

The scenic area is divided into three zones:

Northern Shore: The bustling hub with iconic sites like Bai Causeway, Yue Fei Temple, and the historic Wulin Road.

Key elements include the Su Causeway (planted by Su Shi), Broken Bridge (legendary for its love story), and Lingyin Temple (a 1,600-year-old Buddhist sanctuary).

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return. Q & A

Asked by Fay Stuart from UK | November 12,2025 18:20
What if I want to take a boat midway?
Answered by intotravelchina | November 12,2025 18:27
There are rowboats available at the Huagang Viewing Fish Pier (150 yuan per hour), where you can temporarily lock your bike and board the boat. Remember to check the real-time queue numbers at each pier in advance using the "Palm West Lake" mini-program. The Su Causeway at Spring Dawn Pier often has a 40-minute wait on weekends.

First time to West Lake
It's my first time visiting West Lake. What's the best way to spend the day in the most efficient way? What's a good time to arrive in the morning?
Answered by intotravelchina | October 22,2025 16:14
If you're visiting West Lake for the first time, we recommend arriving before 7 AM! This way, you can avoid the crowds and enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake shrouded in the morning mist. Recommended route: Broken Bridge → Bai Causeway → Calm Lake Autumn Moon (perfect for photos) → Su Causeway (walk or bike) → Flower Harbor Fish Viewing. Have lunch at Lakeside Yintai, and then ascend Leifeng Pagoda for panoramic views in the afternoon. This way, you can visit all the classic attractions in one day without feeling tired!
