Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, located 48 kilometers west of Shanghai’s city center, is a 4A-rated cultural-ecological destination renowned as the "Venice of the East." Founded during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), it spans 1.5 square kilometers with 49 preserved Ming-Qing (1368–1912) residences, 36 stone bridges, and 6 kilometers of canals. Designated a national historical and cultural town in 2007, it offers a living museum of Jiangnan (Yangtze Delta) water town culture, featuring arched bridges, waterfront courtyards, and traditional boat tours.

Historical Overview

  • Song Dynasty Origins (10th–13th centuries): Established as a fishing village along the Dianshan Lake-Huangpu River waterway.
  • Ming-Qing Prosperity (14th–19th centuries): Flourished as a grain transportation hub, with over 200 shops lining its canals.
  • Republican Era (20th century): Declined with the shift to rail transport but preserved its historical fabric.
  • Modern Revival (2000s): Restored as a cultural tourism site, balancing heritage protection with visitor access.

Structural Layout

The town follows a "water-town" layout with three main zones:

  1. Core Canal Zone:
    • North Street (Bei Dajie): 1,000-meter-long pedestrian street lined with Ming-Qing shops and the 24m-tall Fangsheng Bridge.

  2. Residential Zone:
    • Ming-Qing Houses: Over 40 courtyard residences with white walls, black tiles, and carved wooden doorframes.
    • Ancestral Halls: Family temples like the Wang Family Ancestral Hall, featuring stone carvings and genealogy records.
  3. Cultural Space:
    • Post Office Museum: Housed in China’s oldest surviving post office (built 1903).
    • Art Galleries: Modern studios displaying Jiangnan-style ink paintings and calligraphy.

Key structures:

  • Fangsheng Bridge: A 12m-tall, 72m-long five-arch stone bridge offering panoramic canal views.
  • Kezhi Garden: A 1.5-acre Qing Dynasty garden with rockeries, pavilions, and a 300-year-old ginkgo tree.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
